  1. Wasn't Riley further from free agency?
  2. We all know Dave would have offered more if Henry approved it.
  3. Frankly, it looks to me like the hopes of the 2023 team are resting on much the same things that the hopes of the 2022 team were at the deadline: Sale, Paxton, Bello and the other kiddie starters. How come the 2022 hopes were dumb but the 2023 hopes are not?
  4. Yes, and I have been thinking about scenarios in which the Sox finish last again but Bloom keeps his job because of all the hopeful signs from the kids...
  5. Kluber is kind of a special case given his age and recent injury history and the apparent lack of competition from other teams. I don't think it means they'll never give out another big contract. I do think Bloom's "bridge to the kids" strategy is becoming clear. Hopefully it all falls into place!
  6. Yes, I'm pretty sure.
  7. First of all, it doesn't matter how many GM's ago, it was the same owners. And if Devers is gone, that will make 4 homegrown stars gone in their prime in the space of a decade. Not enough for ya to see a pattern?
  8. If you scroll down toward the end of this, you'll see that Abraham and Speier reported the Sox offer at 6 for around 160. The link takes to you the Globe, but that's paywalled. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/padres-xander-bogaerts-agree-to-11-year-deal.html
  9. There was very little outcry when E-Rod signed with the Tigers, because he just wasn't that good. I see no comparison whatsoever.
  10. It was reported that our last offer to Bogaerts was 6/162. And that Boras basically had to sign off on the Sox because there were so many teams with much higher bids, which is what pushed San Diego to the ridiculous amount that closed it.
  11. I don't get why moon thinks this is so different. And I'm pretty sure he never defended them about Lester.
  12. I'll never admit any such thing. I've been consistent and I'm totally comfortable with my position. 3 GAMES OUT WITH SALE AND OTHERS EXPECTED BACK. I thought our chances were lousy and I'm sure Bloom did too. But not so bad as to throw them away. If you and moon want to keep at it we can keep saying the same things for a long time. Like you two, I obviously have time to burn.
  13. What difference do you see between this and the Lester situation? They look identical to me.
  14. They had a shot at making the playoffs. That was what drove the decision. It was an understandable error IMHO. No one knows on July 31 what's going to happen the rest of the way. If you're 10 back you're dead, but not if you're 3 back.
  15. There's no report of any demand by Boras. You're kind of erecting a straw man here. It seems to have been identical to the Lester situation, where the offer was such a non-starter that it was ignored. Bogaerts had all the leverage, with his free agency coming soon, so it was incumbent on the Sox to make a good offer - if they were serious about keeping him.
  16. What we know is that the Red Sox only offer prior to free agency was the added year and $30 million. If they had made a serious offer prior to free agency we might have something more to talk about, but they didn't.
  17. But the money is directly tied to the slot pick differentials, right? They're a package.
  18. I don't know what he's talking about.
  19. Beginning in the 2017-18 offseason, any team that is over the luxury tax threshold and signs a Major League free agent that has rejected a qualifying offer will lose $1 million from their international signing pool in the following signing period. A team that is not over the luxury tax would only forfeit $500,000 of its signing pool in the subsequent period. The international pool penalties only apply if you sign an FA who received a QO.
  20. You're sure about this?
  21. Looks like we'll be re-litigating this decision until Kingdom Come.
  22. What bonus money?
  23. That's true, but if we lose Devers, you'll have a hard time finding a comp for the Red Sox losing 3 players like Betts, Bogaerts and Devers at the ages they stopped playing for us... In fact you might have to look at the Expos to find a comp for this.
  24. Case closed then.
  25. Betts is the only one of the three who's a "complete player".
