  1. He missed 3 years. "Almost 4 years" is fudging it.
  2. Well, it's the Red Sox media that really make a big deal out of this to start with. For obvious reasons - DD pulling a "gotcha" on the Sox is juicy material for those guys.
  3. Sure, but I doubt that he didn't also consider the possibility that Song would get permission to play this year...
  4. It was unknown if he'd be eligible to play. It wasn't known that he wouldn't be. Important distinction IMO. As actual events would suggest.
  5. As I recall, Ned and Monty were replaced by Dick Stockton and (gulp) The Hawk.
  6. No one knows if he'll stick, would be a more accurate way to put it, I think. I think the most rational position is to simply shrug and say "I have no effing idea."
  7. I thought the question is which teams would protect him, not which would select him. You're saying no teams would protect him, even if they had no other pitching prospects.
  8. What Dombrowski did is called "thinking outside the box", IMHO. There's a reason it's called that.
  9. Even a really s***** team with no pitching prospects?
  10. No, there's certainly no data to support protecting Song. A 3 year absence sweeps data out the window.
  11. When I first started listening to Sox games on the radio in the late Sixties, the play-by-play man was Ken Coleman.
  12. Grady's comments after getting fired by the Sox were ultra-weird. Something about how he was going to become another ghost for the team.
  13. It's a fair point about recency bias. But maybe teams are doing more homework on this now, too.
  14. We've been working Ward into the conversation.
  15. Yeah, I just did a quick comparison between Sox home tickets and Cubs home tickets, and the Cubs prices look about 40% higher. Who says John Henry is a money-grubber?
  16. Brutal.
  17. I have to amend - the article by Peter Abraham said DD was "smiling widely".
  18. Aroldis Chapman "slipped and fell" at home, split his lip and cracked a tooth.
  19. What isn't?
  20. Personally I don't have that many regrets about 2003 any more. 2003 motivated the Sox to get Foulke and Schilling and Francona. And Pedro pitched a beauty in Game 3 of the 2004 WS. For me it was all good after that.
  21. Right - this is the essence of it right here. This plus the fact that Theo reportedly met with Grady before the game and basically told him he had to get Pedro out of there no matter what after 105 pitches. Everybody thought Pedro was out of the game, everybody except Grady...
  22. In the Globe it says that Kluber had the option of not going to this game but he wanted to, so there's one little bright spot.
  23. The story is that DD laughed when Song's name was announced at the draft.
  24. It's not.
