  1. I never said that was the goal. Please don't misrepresent.
  2. Every pitcher carries risks. Kind of goes without saying.
  3. Don't know what you're saying.
  4. In my view it's all reality.
  5. And it's only natural to look at some of the moves that could have been made to improve our chances over what they are right now. Henry and Bloom must know that an 85 win season and out of the playoffs isn't going to be enough to placate the fans.
  6. Grim reality is, we've played better than a lot of us expected, but we're 2.5 games out of the playoffs, and none of the teams in front of us are easy pickings.
  7. Yes, you have to be pretty damn lucky to keep "hard hit balls" from leaving the park for a whole month. Maybe the law of diminishing returns applies to some of these advanced metrics.
  8. Of course pitchers are heavily laden with risk in general. That's not going to absolve Bloom from making Kluber, a guy who can't hit 90 on the radar gun, his big acquisition for the rotation. It's still rather baffling that's the best we could do.
  9. Eovaldi still en fuego. Pitching like one of the best in the game. $34 mill was out of range for our thrifty Sox, though.
  10. So in May Wacha has a .354 OPSa, with no home runs allowed, but it's all luck. Is that the conclusion of the Talksox intelligentsia?
  11. Pitching improves as offense disappears. This game will drive you to drink.
  12. How long has the hand injury been affecting him?
  13. The differential with Pivetta isn't big? 1.58 runs and .114 OPS isn't big? As for Sale, the fact they switched him from McGuire to Wong says a lot. Doesn't it seem like they're trying desperately to find someone to match up with McGuire and they can't find one? Maybe if Crawford goes back into the rotation McGuire can catch him.
  14. Just have to keep in mind there's no guarantee the Padres keep Wacha at that rate. It's a player option. He can decline and become a free agent. The only way the Padres can guarantee keeping him is at the higher amount of the team option.
  15. I do get what you're saying, moon. But I find it very disturbing that not one single starter has done well with McGuire. Kluber pitched to Wong once and did OK. The real question is becoming which starters can McGuire catch going forward? Pivetta has been bounced from the rotation so it only leaves Kluber, and his days in the rotation may be numbered too.
  16. Overall CERA: Wong 4.03 McGuire 5.94 The reason McGuire's is so much higher, even though he does better with some pitchers, is obviously that the ones he does badly with are all starters, which translates to a higher volume of innings. Also, the reason McGuire has not caught Houck, Whitlock or Paxton is that either they asked for Wong, or management made the call. It doesn't reflect well on McGuire, in any case.
  17. The problem is that not one Sox starter has done well with McGuire. He has good numbers with some relievers, but not one starter.
  18. It looks like the two teams we have to beat out to make the playoffs might be the Jays and Texas.
  19. McGuire is an average hitter for a catcher.
  20. I posted this on another thread: “Tonight was a little different because I didn’t have great command,” said Paxton. “But Connor did a great job behind the plate changing speeds and keeping those guys off balance.”
  21. The abuse being heaped on the Celtics in the Globe is off the charts.
  22. Wacha's contract is one of those fancy ones with a team option and a player option after the first year. The team option is at a much higher price, similar to Paxton's.
  23. Yes, when they have a lead, that is.
