  1. Crazy as it seems, this team could still make the playoffs, and if they do, it will have a big impact on how Bloom is viewed.
  2. The debate about teams from the present vs. teams from the past seems a bit pointless to me. There are changes that come from technological "advances" and from cultural influences etc. Whatever era it is, you're seeing the best baseball players. As for basketball, those Bird and Magic teams were great, obviously, as were the Jordan teams. LeBron and Steph Curry are pretty damn good too and have multiple rings. They would have been good back then too.
  3. The team that Bloom inherited was coming off an 84 win season and had a lot of expensive players and a very depleted farm. We can certainly question a lot of his moves, but he did inherit a lot of issues.
  4. Right now, hell no, I still have some hope we make the playoffs.
  5. Take it for what it's worth, but an article in The Athletic suggests the Sox have been looking for pitching help, and are still talking about upgrading the 2023 team, with no thoughts of a deadline selloff.
  6. You can argue this one both ways. Yes, they have handed out some big new contracts. On the other hand, they have managed to trim the annual payroll cost from where it was in 2018-2019. They're spending on the one hand and shedding payroll on the other. Your numbers tend not to include the shedding part.
  7. When we win, he becomes Sad Stork.
  8. In 1968 Yaz was the only hitter in the AL to hit .300, at .301. Number Two was, you guessed it, Danny Cater at .290. Yaz was at .269 on August 13, before hitting .372 in his last 44 games. I remember thinking it was a disappointing year for him nonetheless, after his Triple Crown year. Looking at it now, his OPS of .922 and OPS+ of 171 were not too shabby. Leading the NL in hitting in 1968 was Pete Rose at .335.
  9. Once upon a time wins and losses meant more, when starters were routinely pitching complete games or close to it. Though there were still the distortions caused by run support. I got into baseball statistics early, and in 1968, when I was 12, I was fascinated by the records of McLain and Gibson. McLain 31-6 1.96 ERA Gibson 22-9 1.12 ERA This was my introduction to the concept that pitchers with good hitting teams behind them have better records.
  10. I can't see them firing Cora this season. The consensus is he wasn't given a good team. Plus the players like him, which is a big part of why he got re-hired. Firing Cora would just make Bloom look even worse.
  11. Sorry man. I've been a bean-counter for almost half a century now. No exaggeration. A guy I once worked with used to say "Being an accountant is a great job, except for the paperwork."
  12. Accountants are off to a rough start this morning.
  13. Paxton should be a small feel-good story for the Sox. Instead, he's probably #1 on the list of guys we can trade and get a decent prospect back for. Yippee! Plus trading him will put another $1.3 million or so back in JH's pocket! To partially offset the lost ticket revenue when the team goes into post-deadline tank mode.
  14. Whoops, now Cot's shows us at $11 mill under. My bad.
  15. That number is from Cot's Contracts and it does include all the player benefits etc. I checked it and it seems to be accurate. And I'm an accountant, man! "Nothing has come to my attention to indicate that these numbers are not fairly stated in every material respect."
  16. And here's the headline of a piece by Gasper in yesterday's Globe that sums up the feelings of a large contingent of Sox fans: Time is quickly running out for Chaim Bloom and his vision of sustainability
  17. And Vegas now has a world champion team under their belt!
  18. I still find it hard to swallow that we're $16 million under the first tax threshold. As if we couldn't have used a bit more help! And that is obviously on Henry. WTF is John thinking?
  19. Someone probably already pointed this out, but a pitcher can now be charged with a loss even if they retire every batter they face, even if no batter they face reaches base. It happened to Albert Abreu in the Yankees' loss to the Mets last game. Why? Because Abreu was "responsible" for the ghost runner who scored after he was replaced.
  20. You're absolutely right, but it's still a depressing situation.
  21. mvp explained Raffy sitting last night above. The truth is we have no idea exactly how he determines who to sit when. As has been said many times, he knows these guys and what's going on with them a lot better than we do.
  22. Just imagine how all the hitters who have averaged 211/272/353 against him this year must feel!
  23. If they exercise the option, they have to pick up both years.
