The $313.5 million extension for Devers is a start.

Mookie's contract is risky too. It has 9 more years after this one. But as of now, it looks pretty damn good. We have our own $300 million man now in Raffy. How many $300 million men can a team afford to bet on, seems a reasonable question.

The names you listed reinforce how risky the big contracts are. Judge got $360 mill and has played 49 games. Turner got $300 mill and has an OPS of .687.

You can never say never with Henry. Plus I think Bloom's 5 year plan has to include acquiring a top line starter.

Agree. Houck, Crawford, Schreiber and Winckowski are other possibilities.

Right. I was only talking about the 2018-2019 payroll numbers. (Hanley's last year on the payroll was 2018.)

The payroll numbers always require further analysis. DD inherited some big salaries from Ben-notably Pablo, Hanley, Pedroia and Porcello-of which only Porcello had any value.

But may be improving in that department, if Bello is an indicator.

What I'm saying is that it hurt Bloom for the years 2020, 2021 and 2022, but not 2023. In 2023 he did have a significant influx of young talent. We're just arguing about the number of years.

From Bloom's perspective, it was a 3 year period with just Houck. Bello/Casas/Duran arrived in Bloom's year 4.

At times the 2023 team does look competitive, especially with the emergence of Bello and Paxton, and, hopefully, the resolution of the SS situation. Too bad Houck and Whitlock are injured. But every team has injuries. Will Bloom get us a starting pitcher? Now I'm mumbling...

Apparently they did make what they considered a very serious offer to Eovaldi too. Even Cora was adamant about that. But it's not much consolation when you don't actually get their signatures on the bottom line.

My opinion of Bloom has been falling and rising this year based on the performance of the team on the field, which is kind of strange and not really fair, but I can't seem to help it.

Agreed. Unfortunately, many of us do single out players we don't like, and I'm including myself (McGuire). Barnes did a fine job for us at times, and one of those times was the 2018 postseason. I'd certainly buy him a beer or two.

I like that plan too, and I think it does line up with Bloom's approach.

The more I think about it, I wouldn't trade Bello or Mayer for two months of Ohtani-not unless it's one of the those dramatic deals where you get 48 hours to negotiate an extension, and in that case Ohtani wouldn't take any offer that wasn't absurdly beyond his own expectations. Somehow I don't see this happening.

Ohtani is an incredible talent but a problematic investment, because he carries just as much risk as every other pitcher who's had Tommy John surgery.
