Eovaldi was coming back from the IL and had a few rough games before straightening out in the postseason.
Giolito was horrible for 14 games, almost half a season.

Yes. But in this case the team would already have performed an exam and I assume would provide all the material to the insurer. So it would be a second exam that might reveal an issue the first exam didn't show. Would the Players Association be OK with that?
It's a little better than that because it's a team option for what would have been the second year of free agency. If something bad happens they don't exercise that option.
Overall I think this was a good move.
There was a report a few years ago that the Sox generally don't insure contracts. Insurers are like casinos - the house wins more than it loses or they wouldn't be in business.
