  1. They're paying $17 million of the $27.5 million, so it would only have cost an additional $10.5 million to keep him. If they saved the whole $27.5 million it would be a different conversation.
  2. I think they've done a great job lowering our expectations for what constitutes success.
  3. Right. Of course Paxton was never in Sale's league. All it shows is that teams are willing to roll the dice on guys with that kind of injury history, because starting pitching with any kind of credentials is just such a precious commodity.
  4. When he starts using Horn and Anderson in higher leverage situations, you'll find out.
  5. FanGraphs has our chances at making the playoffs at 38.9% now. So we have a 61.1% chance of missing the playoffs for the third year in a row. But sure, forget about the nasty facts and wave the pom-poms.
  6. This is lame stuff and adds nothing to any discussion. At least I tried to articulate my position.
  7. It's not about one series, not for me anyway. I think our pitching staff is in the process of unraveling and that it has a lot to do with the blunders and lack of commitment of the guys who run things. I'm not blaming the players or the manager. I think they're doing their best.
  8. And we've all been around to see Mookie Betts traded.
  9. People are going to react the way they react. No need for counseling. The Sox won 78 games in 2022 and 78 games in 2023 and are out of the last wild card spot for 2024 right now. Not sure why we should be all sunshine and roses.
  10. You're kind of getting on the high horse here, man. Your first post today said this weekend sucked. You can always put people on ignore or scroll past the negative ones.
  11. They had the option of having them both. That was certain to yield at least as many innings as only having one of them.
  12. But what we're talking about here isn't even the real world. It's just a baseball team.
  13. For me the whining is cathartic and therefore improves my mental health. My whining is principally about ownership and their failure to be fully invested in the team. I just don't trust them any more.
  14. It's accurate that we're outside of a playoff spot right now.
  15. This team sucks on Fridays and sucks against lefty starters, so this series didn't line up well.
  16. James Paxton is not an unreasonable comp for Sale. Similar age and innings history since 2019. Not as good quality innings as Sale. The Dodgers are probably just fine with their investment in him.
  17. And the Giolito signing was a weird one, too. Not just because the guy was so bad at the end of last year, but the contract was structured so that if he pitched well he would likely opt out after one year. That's some solution to the rotation! The only conclusion is that the team wasn't really all in, for the 3rd row in a row. Now we have a pitching staff that's ready to implode.
  18. The problem is that the team that made the trade really didn't have enough starting pitching, and by trading Sale they had less. They only signed Giolito, Giolito got injured and they didn't replace him. It's not so much that trading Sale is a head-scratcher, it was their overall approach to the starting pitching depth and lack thereof that's a head-scratcher.
  19. Clearly Denny means 2025 and beyond, as did I.
  20. Not sure this has any relevance. The ghost runner does achieve the purposes of reducing game times and decreasing the total innings that pitchers throw. Without reducing the number of games or ticket revenues. So it's a win-win except for purists.
  21. Seems like the kind of thing you would want to do in the offseason rather than right now, though, if you care about what happens this year. Abreu has been one of our better bats, after all.
  22. I think you're right. Not sure that's a big difference-maker though. Would be interesting to see what the results have been, small sample though it would be.
  23. I don't blame you. I don't like it but I understand it from one perspective - pitchers are getting injured enough as it is.
  24. I think all any of us really care about is the last wildcard spot. It's pretty much as good as the first wildcard spot.
  25. Yeah, I think scoring 1 run with the ghost runner is basically average at best. You need to score at least 2. Even that may not do it as we have seen. There are going to be a lot of runs scored in these Manfred innings, one reason being that teams are often down to their crappier relievers.
