    Ironically, I was hopeful the last two years around this time and wanted to buy. We all saw how that turned out. Won't Get Fooled Again.

    I don't feel bad about running up the white flag in July when the front office does it before the season starts.

    That is true. However one thing is pretty certain at this point-it's a big time failing grade for 2024.

    The Sox selling off really looks like the smarter move right now. It might also result in the team ending up with 75 wins or less, which will be just a tad embarrassing for Sam and company.

    From now on I'm not going to talk about the Sale trade as a blunder in itself, but only as part of a blundering general approach. That's my compromise.

    Houck and Crawford were bound to wear down some due to the innings increase. Certainly something that was fairly easy to predict, and points again to negligence.

    Plus Ragans, who I guess would not have been technically a prospect any more, but certainly looking like a massive haul for the sellers.

    The momentum of our pitching arms seems to have shifted.

    moon, it's all about the lack of commitment at the top. If someone told you before the last offseason that the sum of the moves to the rotation would be as follows: 1) Trade Sale 2) Sign Giolito 3) Absolutely nothing else-even if a couple of guys (Giolito, Whitlock) go down for the season in a hurry you would have wanted to slug them. It's all about the pitching. As far as position players go, we've had a lot of good stuff and more on the way with the big prospects. But they continue to criminally neglect the pitching. And as we can see now, Andrew Bailey is not in fact a magician.

    The worst possible thing Breslow can do is replicate Bloom's indecisive look, and he knows it. I don't envy him right now.

    It's really looking like the sell lane now. They're 2 games out of the playoffs today and the pitching is trending toward disastrous. There have been a lot of good developments, but I can't really see much hope for the pitching the rest of the way. They'd have to acquire 2-3 decent arms and we know that ain't happening.

    I don't know, like I say, tough spot. Much too similar to the spot Bloom found himself in. No clear good options. But this is what they keep doing to themselves with their half-ass offseasons.

    They just might have to sell. The pitching is falling apart. Houck is probably wearing down. No one really knows when Slaten or Martin will be back. Among other problems. Breslow is in a very tough spot, especially since he's already promised to pick a lane.

    The fact they didn't replace the long gone Giolito even though he was supposed to be an innings eater tells you all you need to know. They were being cheap and doing the bare minimum (if that) to upgrade the rotation, just like they did in the Bloom years. There's some bad luck involved with Sale and Giolito, sure, but it's the underlying philosophy that really sucks.

    They're paying $17 million of the $27.5 million, so it would only have cost an additional $10.5 million to keep him. If they saved the whole $27.5 million it would be a different conversation.

    I think they've done a great job lowering our expectations for what constitutes success.

    Right. Of course Paxton was never in Sale's league. All it shows is that teams are willing to roll the dice on guys with that kind of injury history, because starting pitching with any kind of credentials is just such a precious commodity.

    When he starts using Horn and Anderson in higher leverage situations, you'll find out.

    FanGraphs has our chances at making the playoffs at 38.9% now. So we have a 61.1% chance of missing the playoffs for the third year in a row. But sure, forget about the nasty facts and wave the pom-poms.
