  1. That is true. A few guys at another forum I post on broke down all the numbers though, and it wasn't just Beckett that produced the good numbers with Varitek. Anyway I don't want to open up all the 'he calls a good game' stuff.
  2. And I agree with you. I just don't think it's necessarily Bowden's delivery that's his problem.
  3. Varitek's numbers last year, though, would tend to support the view that giving up a lot of stolen bases won't kill you if the pitching is good. In his 68 games the opposition had 73 stolen bases in 85 attempts. Pretty bad numbers. But the opposition only scored 3.57 earned runs per game when Varitek was catching.
  4. Wouldn't you say his delivery is like Foulke's?
  5. Pumpsie, aren't you one of the guys who says Francona was costing us 5-10 wins a year? Where's the adjustment for that?
  6. Some good nitty gritty stuff about the tax there, jung. Just a couple of things. -Tax thresholds for next 5 years: 2012 178 m 2013 178 m 2014 189 m 2015 189 m 2016 189 m -The differential cost of exceeding the cap every year vs. only doing it in alternate years as you suggest is effectively 32.5% (50.0 - 17.5), right? So on 10 million salary you would be effectively penalized 3.25 million. A huge chunk of money, but then you have to compare that to its impact on total revenues and total expenses, including income taxes I suppose.
  7. About the arbitration offer to Ortiz, is it possible the Sox think they could convince an arbitrator that he doesn't actually deserve a raise from the 12.5 million? The arbitration rules say that one of the factors to consider is the market rates for other players at the same position. Vlad Guerrero only got about $8 million last year after a 115 RBI season.
  8. Owning the Marlins isn't the same thing as owning the Red Sox. The Marlins are a business asset. The Red Sox are one of the crown jewels of sports franchises. The Marlins were a stepping stone to the top for Henry. Mind you if things were to really go sour on the field for awhile I could see where things might change. A string of third place finishes, a couple more slips on the yacht, a story in the Globe about a spike in sales of pitchforks and torches, and yes, I could see him entertaining some offers.
  9. I don't think the term Yawkeyism applies to Varitek and Wakefield. The Red Sox have kept them around because they were cheap and they contributed. Varitek made 2 million last year compared to the 10 million he made in his prime. Wakefield has always been cheap labor. Bernie Williams and Posada would not play for 2 million a year, I don't think. Now don't read into that that I want Tek and Wake back. I would really prefer we were in a position we could move on from them. They're just too old now, frankly. I'd like to see Tek get a coaching position somewhere in the organization.
  10. I don't think any of us really know what Henry's thinking. As everyone keeps pointing out, he's a businessman. But I think he kind of enjoys being owner of the Boston Red Sox. It would make anyone's life a lot more interesting.
  11. Henry said he plans to own for another 10 years. Also I think they will exceed the Luxury Tax threshold this year. They are very close to it already.
  12. A little strange, but the only thing he disclosed was about Beckett being PO'd about BV's comments about taking too long on the mound. He gave the impression they had a long talk after that.
  13. I think Crawford needs a little latitude here too. Maybe he was really messed up about what happened last year and not ready to talk yet. He deserves a chance to make things right.
  14. You have to admit Valentine has been brought into a situation that is both unusual and difficult. If they hired, say, Sveum, and he handled these same questions by saying 'it's being looked after' or something equally uninformative, a lot of people would be angry about that too. They'd be saying 'same old crap, meet the new boss, same as the old boss' and things like that.
  15. I think Francona was successful up until 2008. In retrospect, losing that series against the Rays was kind of the beginning of the end for him.
  16. Not sure is Scioscia is a good example, because he's a manager who has the option of just shipping the player out of town if he doesn't like him. Napoli says that's what happened to him.
  17. I was a Tito fan. Personally I think it's much too early in the game to judge Valentine one way or the other. With regard to what he revealed about his talk with Beckett, I don't see it as a big deal. He said Beckett was pissed off about his remarks about taking a long time between pitches. I think we already knew that. He also said they had a long conversation after that and it went pretty well. Beckett should be able to handle what Valentine said. The guy is making 17 million a year.
  18. FWIW Rich Hill thinks he'll be ready to pitch 'early this season'.
