  1. Jeez, none of the candidates have even thrown 5 innings in spring training games yet, so it's a bit early. Hey, Cook, Miller, Ohlendorf and Tazawa all have spring ERA's of 0.00, so I'd say we're overflowing with good options.
  2. This opens up a whole other discussion, but I have to give A-Gon a pass on those comments if he is being truthful about his religious beliefs. We've heard athletes who give the credit to God when they succeed. Presumably A-Gon would do the same if the Sox win the World Series. If not, then we might have a problem.
  3. I find that paragragh by Shaughnessy so typical and irritating because it's so lazy. He's not really interested in discussing the possibilities of Crawford coming back, or the Ross and Sweeney platoon in right field, or the possibilities of Bard or Aceves filling one or both of the rotation slots.
  4. The Sox still have holes at shortstop, left field, and right field. They have downgraded at closer. They don’t have fourth and fifth starters. New York, Tampa, Texas, Anaheim, and Detroit all got better. The Sox are not better. Anybody else skeptical about the Local Nine? Who will be the first to note that the home opener is on Friday the 13th? This paragraph is so typical of Shaughnessy's snide, irritating style. And the shot at Gonzalez was brutal. I've had enough of him, I really have. I certainly don't expect the writers to fawn all over the Sox and say how great they are. But Shaughnessy has been writing like a hack and being a pain in the ass long enough now.
  5. In 2007 the Red Sox had the dream outfield, though we only saw it in the late innings in the playoffs. Ellsbury in left, Crisp in centre, Drew in right. Now that was an outfield.
  6. None taken. And I agree that it's subjective. Of course it can be argued that all defensive measures are subjective, including the scoring of errors. How about this-Ellsbury won the Gold Glove last year and had a fielding percentage of 1.000. I think he's covered for his 2011 fielding, old-school or new-school.
  7. Ellsbury's 2011 UZR of 15.6 was the best of any centre fielder in the majors. He's only had one season, 2009, with a UZR that wasn't very good.
  8. This is 3 years in a row teams have not been interested in keeping Damon.
  9. They were playing the Brewers and Marichal got knocked out after only getting one out. The Sox were down 4-0 but came back to win 8-6. Dick Pole got the win in 7 strong innings of relief. Beniquez was playing center but didn't make any catches while Marichal was in. Dwight Evans and Bernie Carbo had 2 RBI each. A little of that I remember, the rest is courtesy of Baseball-Reference.
  10. Oh well, good games today for Beckett and Iglesias.
  11. I've got no problems with Papelbon. He was key for us winning in 2007 and he pitched great for us 90% of the time. He has a bit of a mouth sometimes but I don't think there are any bad intentions behind it.
  12. The first game I ever saw at Fenway was in 1974 and Marichal was the starting pitcher.
  13. Fred Cusick stuck around a long time. I remember him doing Bruins games in the late Seventies. He had one of those classic voices. Ken Coleman was the classic Red Sox radio voice, I think.
  14. This is no ********, I was following the game on my transistor radio when Luis Aparicio fell rounding third base in Detroit in 1972. I can still remember it clearly, because it was my first Red Sox 'WTF just happened?' moment.
  15. I read something semi-interesting by SI's Verducci today. He suggested that with the expanded interleague play starting next year, the two leagues are going to have to decide to either use the DH in both leagues or eliminate it. And he thinks that it's more likely that the NL will adopt the DH, because the players union will make a big push for it (more jobs available).
  16. You might see a few pitch counts into the 120's but I don't think you'll see it with any consistency. Verlander is one of the few guys a manager would be comfortable doing that with. Sabathia had 3 pitch counts of 120 and over last year, but the first wasn't until August 30. I do agree that Valentine will try to increase a bit from Tito's limits.
  17. How did Buchholz look?
  18. Agreed that there's plenty of concern about him being effective. There seems to be another concern out there about Bard getting messed up to the point he's useless in either role, because of what happened with Joba. But I can't think of too many cases like Joba's.
  19. One guy that doesn't get talked about much who could be a good asset for this year's bullpen is Atchison. He pitched well last year. 2.64 ERA and .96 WHIP in Pawtucket, 3.26 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in Boston-30.1 innings.
