  1. You're trying to make the facts fit your theory. If not splurging in a particular year is indicative of an intention to sell, then the Steinbrenners must be doing the same because they didn't add any big contracts this year either. Like the Red Sox they maintained their total payroll at roughly the same as it was for 2011.
  2. Huh? I don't see where you're getting that from at all. Last year they entered into two of the longest and most expensive contracts in team history. This year they didn't have any payroll room left to make any big deals.
  3. I would have thought that for many of the pre 67 fans, finally winning it all would have dispelled a lot of the negativity.
  4. Yep, in the first 11 games of the season, one team or the other has reached double figures 6 times. And Valentine has already invoked the 7-run rule 3 times.
  5. This team never does anything half-ass, do they? Tonight they have 3 players have the worst game of their careers in the same game...Lester, Youkilis and Melancon.
  6. I don't necessarily disagree. However, the problem is that the value of the manager is an unmeasurable intangible. You can't conclusively prove that a manager affected the outcome of a single game, even if they made what everyone agrees was a brilliant or boneheaded move on a key play. Because you're left with the unknown quantity of what would have happened if the other move was made.
  7. He may well be a lame duck. To me, after seeing what happened with Tito, and now what's happening with Valentine, it shows what a crazy hard job it is managing the Sox. You will get a decent paycheque, but you will be subjected to an incredible amount of scrutiny, second-guessing, name-calling and abuse.
  8. Couldn't agree more.
  9. One question that comes to mind is who the hell would they get to replace him? Manager of the Red Sox is neither an easy job these days nor a particularly inviting one, considering what's been going on with the team on the field and off.
  10. Most of the attention goes to the recent failures with big-dollar free agency signings. But what doesn't get as much attention is the team's recent failures in bringing MLB-ready talent up from their system. I guess this is stating the obvious, but if you have good young pitchers like the Rays, you don't have to pay huge dollars signing guys like Matsuzaka and Lackey.
  11. Personally I will forever be grateful for the 2004 and 2007 championships. I've been with this team since the late 60's and gone through the same intense suffering as other Red Sox fans of my age group. My loyalty to the people who were part of the championship teams has cast me as a pollyanna in some people's eyes. All that said, I do not have a good feeling about the current team. It's just incredible that they are 8-25 in their last 33 games over 2 years. I've never seen a stretch like it. And they've got a potentially brutal home stand coming up. I do understand some of the negative thoughts out there right now. I know this team will rebound at some point but right now I have no feel for when that might happen.
  12. Sucktacular would be more like it.
  13. Bard did give up 5 earned runs. But last night's game is a good illustration of what an imperfect stat ERA is. Bard left 2 men on base and Thomas allowed them both to score. Drabek also left the game with 2 men on base, but Frasor got a DP so neither of the inherited runners scored. The jobs done by the relievers made a difference of 2 earned runs for the starters.
  14. I think they should hang on to Bowden for now, as a middle reliever of course. I think he has improved. He pitched decently in the spring. He's given up one run in 3 innings so far.
  15. I noticed something odd about the way Philly has used Papelbon so far. Game 1 he got the save, nothing odd there. But Game 2 they lost 2-1 in extra innings, and Game 3 they lost 5-4, blowing a 4-1 lead, giving up 2 in the 7th, 1 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th. And Papelbon didn't pitch in either game. Then last night Manuel brings him in in the 9th when they're losing 5-2-to get some work?-and he gives up a home run. Kind of strange managing.
  16. There was an off day so he's pitched 3 times in 5 days. He's our #1 end-of-game pitcher and we've had 3 close games. Seems like normal usage to me.
  17. That quote sounds like vintage Manny.
  18. I have a bad feeling that Beckett is headed to the DL, maybe even surgery. It feels like 'two thumbs down' is gonna be the tagline of our season.
  19. It's kind of difficult to put a value on the durability factor. But Papelbon has turned in 6 straight seasons of 58 or more innings, and all traces of any shoulder issues seem to be gone. Bailey's durability is very much in question. I was just looking at Bailey's stats-I didn't realize he pitched 83 innings in his first season. That seems like way too many. It might have contributed to his subsequent problems.
  20. Don't trust your memory on things like that. Here are some very recent August records to make you feel better: 2004 21-7 2005 18-9 2008 18-9 2009 16-12 2011 17-12
  21. Aceves must be excited about this. In his dreams tonight he will hear those beautiful words whispered by the baseball angels: 'Closer money'
  22. I think Aceves could be a closer if they give him a shot. He knows how to get hitters out and he doesn't seem bothered by pressure. Plus he would be motivated because this could be his chance to make some big money down the road.
