  1. Another loss. A fast one, anyway.
  2. You forced me to do my homework on this and now that I have, I find that your statement above is totally inaccurate. I read the whole article, then I listened to her followup interview on the Dennis and Callahan show. She specifically says 'I believe Youkilis is part of the solution' and she also states clearly that she doesn't think the Red Sox should get rid of him. She talks about Youkilis's passion and says 'that's what we love about him'. Maybe you should listen to the interview again. http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=jackie%20macmullan%20kevin%20youkilis&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CFQQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Faudio.weei.com%2Fa%2F46614208%2Fjackie-macmullan-talks-about-her-kevin-youkilis-story-on-espn.htm&ei=Ap7WT_z0DMjd0QHc0aCKAw&usg=AFQjCNFqpTL_tS2tK1e0zMvOU_hBPAgLIA
  3. I do accept her as a credible source. So let's look at exactly what she said: 'Sour and cynical...carping' Yes, I can believe all that. 'Insistence on inserting himself into other people's affairs' That's his comments about Ellsbury. I'd agree that the comments were ill-advised. Did they affect Ellsbury? I can't see how, considering he had an MVP-calibre season. 'turned him into a detriment' That's a pretty non-specific statement. You can put your own interpretation on how harsh of a criticism this was on Youkilis. It certainly doesn't sound to me like anything comparable to a Manny situation. As for what his teammates said, I'm sure if nobody had said anything, people would take that as a sign that the players didn't support him.
  4. See how Mazz slipped that last sentence in? He's not saying Beckett was an ace that year, he's saying he 'appeared to take the baton'. WTF does that even mean? I just enjoy poking holes in the columns of people like Mazz. The thing is that Beckett's ERA and WHIP were better last year than they were in 2007. So couldn't he possibly be good enough to lead a team to the World Series if he did it in 2007, and also in 2003?
  5. There are plenty of reports out there about the Red Sox having already had preliminary trade talks with teams about Youkilis. Pretty unlikely he doesn't get traded by the deadline.
  6. Jackie Mac is a good writer. But should I put more weight on what she said or on what Youkilis's teammates said about him after Valentine's comments early this year? Pedroia: "I know he plays as hard as anybody I've ever seen in my life. I have his back and his teammates have his back...The whole team is behind Youk." Gonzalez: ""All you can do is tell Youk we love him. All it says is we have each others' backs. We're pulling for each other on the field and in the clubhouse. We've got a strong bond." Exact words, Nick.
  7. Bailey wasn't on the DL at the end of 2011. In his last 4 appearances from Sept 22 to Sept 28 he pitched 4 scoreless, hitless innings. Sounds like a healthy pitcher. Injury-prone, yes, but not injured.
  8. Fred, you have a tendency to not read other people's posts very carefully and also, for your own convenience, you tend to lump people together as if they have identical views even if they don't. So let me clarify something. My argument is not with Youkilis being traded. I have said that he should be traded to make way for WMB. My argument with Nick was that I don't think Cherington is an 'incompetent fool' who made a 'huge blunder' for not trading Youkilis this past offseason (rather than before the July/12 trade deadline). I also don't accept that Youkilis is a clubhouse cancer because some writers say he is. That's about it.
  9. Emmz, I agree. There are always going to be optimist and pessimist views and if people are staying within the rules you can't just tell them to go away. The rest is up to the mods.
  10. The team is playing s***** ball, and that's not because of the umpiring. But as a totally separate matter those charts do show an inexcusable error rate by the umpires. I don't know what can be done about it but it just isn't right. Pitches on the border you can understand, but not ones that everybody at home can easily see are well inside or outside the zone.
  11. Now 14-19 at Fenway this year. That just ain't right.
  12. Man, I cringed when I saw Houston scored 11 runs today, but Lowrie was 0 for 5 with 3 K's.
  13. I love the stats as much as anyone, but sometimes you can slice 'em and dice 'em all you want and it just doesn't matter. The bottom line is, we're having a f*** of a time winning games.
  14. Gotta think not...I'd expect his first appearance will be 'low-leverage'.
  15. Look, on the one hand you are speculating that Scutaro may have been traded because he was the clubhouse snitch. So if Youkilis was that big a problem, why wouldn't they have unloaded him? It's all guessy-guessy stuff, Nick. Conspiracy theorizing.
  16. It's easy to say 'not moving Youkilis was a huge blunder', but as has been pointed out, he wouldn't have had much trade value in the offseason. They would have gotten very little back and would probably have had to eat most of his salary. As for the problem in the clubhouse stuff, that's all speculation by the writers.
  17. At this point I wish they had signed Edwin Jackson. The Nats got him for one year for $11 million and he has been very solid so far.
  18. Your case for the Scutaro trade being a bad move is less than zero. Scutaro would have cost 6 million plus 40% luxury tax, and Aviles is playing better than Scutaro.
  19. The thing that's worrisome about Melancon is that there are reports that the Yankees lost him because they felt he just wasn't a bright lights kind of guy. And his first 2 outings for the Sox added far too much credibility to that notion.
  20. His fielding numbers have been consistently good. Not sure why you're disregarding the numbers. Anyway he's just a utility player. I agree the 2 years was surprising. But it's 1.5 million a year.
  21. I only pointed that out because you specifically said he had no business on a major league roster 'for a contender'.
