  1. The internal audit they commissioned is starting to bear fruit! 😎
  2. I've been having a lot of issues with this myself. I think we all know and accept why the ads are here, but at the moment they really seem to be disrupting the ability to post normally.
  3. So why not increase it to 16 teams, if it's the more the merrier? What's the cutoff point? I realize other sports let more than 12 teams in, but baseball is arguably a much different game, with a much higher crapshoot factor in each series.
  4. I guess it depends on how you interpret his fWAR. fWAR punishes DHs for only doing one thing. Especially if they're lousy baserunners as Yoshida and most DHs are. That new Mendoza line works for position players but I don't think it works fpr DHs. A permanent DH probably needs to OPS .825 or more to justify their existence.
  5. Yeah, they should never make any substantial changes to the physical structure, other than if they could somehow improve the seats. The essential shape and character should be preserved until the End of Days.
  6. Yoshida has a total fWAR of 1.5 in 2 seasons with us. That's not good. I think a DH has to post an OPS of .850 at minimum to be a true asset. Ortiz had some seasons of 4-5 WAR. The verdict is in - in spite of some promising little stretches, at the end of the day Yoshida is not a plus, he's a minus.
  7. Of course. Nothing can actually prevent baseball players from getting injured. I think everyone knows that. The main point about 2B is that it would be easier on his throwing arm, which is the biggest concern based on his injury history. His last injury came from diving for a ball.
  8. So injuries are bad.
  9. You're right, he's also got some actual baseball smarts and veteran presence. They sure as hell better not trade him.
  10. I'd say the third Wild Card is turning out to be an abomination against mankind.
  11. Well, we actually have a positive development - Trevor Story is hitting some baseballs hard. We really need this guy to be healthy and productive next year. If he is he fills 2 huge needs at once, solid infield defense and a right handed power bat.
  12. To me this just sounds like you rooting for Henry's wallet again. 😎
  13. Great piece of work, Maddie. You are really good at writing this stuff and I will be reading all your articles. And it's definitely a fun thing that we have done so well against Cole. Especially in that playoff game. Now, the unfortunate thing for me personally is that I'm feeling so down about the team lately, including the offense, and the first thing that occurs to me is this: In that last series vs. the Yanks we scored 14 runs in 37 innings - 7 against Cole in 4.1 IP, which was beautiful, 7 against pitchers not named Cole in the other 32.2 IP, which was horrid. How can they beat up on Cole like that but do nothing against the rest of the Yankee staff? (I realize part of the answer to that is that it's just a nutty game.)
  14. It's definitely not a top priority, except for replacing O'Neill if he's gone. Pitching is it.
  15. Kimbrel has been very up and down since he left Boston. Great for streaks, horrible for streaks. He was in and out of the closer spot this year, now he's very much out, I think. It's a hard game. A very thin line between succeeding and failing at this level.
  16. And where are the results of the amazing job?
  17. Cora always seemed like a guy who did believe in rest days. Maybe he looked at the Braves and thought they were succeeding by not resting. But as you say the payoff of this for the Braves looks questionable now. The Red Sox sure need to figure out why they run out of steam after the ASB each year in recent years.
  18. Although I think every team would still love to have a closer like Emmanuel Clase. Not easy to find of course.
  19. Baseball fans are being treated to a historic matchup tonight: the 36-115 White Sox visiting the 60-90 Angels. That's a combined record of 96-205! The White Sox are potentially the worst team in history, and the Angels have arguably been the most dysfunctional team in the game for a decade or so. What a matchup! 😁
  20. On further review, the 1962 Mets played 161 games, with one tie! I somehow managed to delete from my mind any knowledge that there were ever ties in baseball.
  21. 22-34 in our last 56. That's .393 baseball. Last place far from out of the question. I hate to say it, but this is just not a good team, and the prognosis for next year is not really that great, in spite of the excitement surrounding the Fab Four. And we know now that John Henry is more than willing to keep punting until he thinks the time is right to get serious again.
  22. But a lot of times there is punishment for being too honest.
  23. Since we're all such analytical types, we should be willing to agree that when your projected % of making the playoffs drops down below 20% or whatever a reasonable threshold would be, you're not really "in it" any more.
  24. I don't see anything there about the Sox being a contendah next year. 😉
