    The $325 million man and the $324 million man both stunk yesterday, but their teams bailed them out. The Dodgers' rotation is in shreds, mostly because of injuries, but also because Yamamoto does not look very good. I don't see how they can win it with their rotation as it stands.

    I like Gausman, but trading Mayer for 2 years of him seems a bit extreme. What does BTV say about this trade?

    It's almost like a lot of Sox fans think the offense will just magically appear, because offense is the easy part, or because Sox fans are used to having strong offenses or because our top prospects are all position players.

    Duran was #8 in MLB in Total Bases with 330, ahead of Juan Soto and Yordan Alvarez. He led MLB in BOTH DOUBLES AND TRIPLES! Sox TB leaders: Duran 330 Devers 271 Rafaela 212 O'Neill 210 Not. Even. Close.

    I thought the rotation WAR actually ended up fairly good? I'm all for beefing up the rotation and the pen, obviously. But if you think we have plenty of offense to spare, I'm not really sure what numbers you're basing that on.

    Because "feeling" is exactly the right way to describe it. "Hunch" is also a perfect fit.

    It's not just the clutch hitting. It's having one of the worst K/BB ratios in MLB. It's having a .654 OPS in September. Now just imagine how our 2024 offense would have looked without Duran.

    If we're just talking about bodies, sure. What we don't have is a surplus of offense. We sure as hell don't have a surplus of 8 win position players. His speed and defense obviously contributed a lot to his WAR. I think it's kind of nice to have a guy with Duran's OPS, speed and defense. Really not sure why so many are so anxious to see him go...

    I'd prefer not to put Anthony and Campbell in the position of being the kids who are coming to save our offense.

    We can put everyone in that pile, I guess, if we assume there are other teams out there who are prepared to give back more than they get. But in general the best approach is to trade from an area of surplus to strengthen an area of need.

    There never were that many, though. With the Red Sox over the last 50 years we're talking Tiant, Eckersley, Clemens, Pedro, Schilling, Price, Sale...like I say, just think of the guys with HOF credentials or close to it. Bring up names like Beckett and Lester and that's when the arguments start...

    Trading Duran would be dumb because: a) this is a team that still needs offense in a big way b) there are other ways to acquire pitching which this team has-prospects and money

    Nope, logic fail. Since the Red Sox would be giving up those 4 years, you have an offsetting argument for keeping him.

    My definition of an Ace, based on who most fans seem to think is an ace, is a pitcher who has some chance of being a Hall of Famer one day. I know that sounds silly, but I think it's also pretty accurate.

    Soto, but it was a very different situation. -Soto is one of the best players in the game and a long-term proven commodity -Soto was in his contract year So yeah, it would be comparable to the Betts trade, except the Padres did much better on the return.

    Not sure what you're saying. Generally speaking, a 1.00 WHIP equates to facing an average of 4 hitters per inning. 1 gets on, 3 get out. That's elite level pitching, giving up only a .250 OBP, lower than Ceddanne Rafaela. With obvious variables like errors, double plays etc.

    Duran is 28 years old and entering arbitration years. And as you say, he might fall back to earth. And as notin says, he'd be more appealing to a win now team. No way you get any top tier pitching back.

    No, I was only responding to the point about expected hitters in the 8th and 9th. I will say this, I think it's very rare to see any manager bring in their best reliever in the 7th inning in a regular season game, and I believe the stats will back that up. Why they are reluctant to do so is a question that could be discussed at great length.

    If the Sox are dealing for top tier pitching, other teams are asking for members of the Fab Four, not Duran Duran.

    He was also very good in 2023. What reason is there to think he won't stay good? None - except wheeler dealer hunches. 😄
