  1. Tanaka's been unreal so far. What's hard to believe is that every other thing possible has gone wrong for the Yanks.
  2. I didn't think much of OPS when I first saw it. Adding two other stats together - you kidding me? But now, f*** it, OPS seems about as good as you're going to get for a comprehensible number to compare hitters with. I can't deal with those ones that look like hieroglyphics.
  3. Aha, but consider this: -A single can move a baserunner with speed two bases a significant % of the time. -A walk will sometimes not move a baserunner at all. Runners at second and third: -A single can result in 2 runs. -A walk results in 0 runs. Just messin' with you UN, because I realize you already know those things quite well. A little statistical analysis on the relative value of a single vs. a walk would be interesting.
  4. I think Middlebrooks is the guy whose time might be getting very short.
  5. Alas, Pal, you just can't mess with the basics of the game like that.
  6. Sizemore is doing pretty well when you consider all the time he missed.
  7. When you see so many kids blowing out their arms, though, it lends credibility to what Doc Andrews is saying.
  8. 4-3 after 1. Perfect. This game may make last night's look like a pitcher's duel. Look out bullpens!
  9. I really have to wrap it up with my yammering about Thornton, I know. But I remember watching him for us last year and thinking he was throwing the ball just fine. But guys just kept getting on base against him.
  10. Granderson seems inspired.
  11. I was overplaying it a bit no doubt. But are you satisfied with Thornton being the primary lefty in your pen?
  12. Thornton is washed up. He showed it with us last year, he's confirming it now. I don't see how anyone can make a case that letting Logan go in favor of this guy was a sound move.
  13. Your point about the numbers certainly has merit. Thornton's ERA is 5.40 and his WHIP is 1.8 after last night, and he's their lefty. That's where I find plenty of fault. Especially for a team with a right field short porch, having a good lefty or two would be useful.
  14. Signing a couple of good relievers would have been a worthwhile idea. The Yankee FO screwed the pooch there IMO.
  15. In fairness to Girardi I think the way he used Thornton last night was pretty standard when the 3 hitters due up are L-R-L. You will often see managers leave the lefty in to face all 3, hoping the RH hitter doesn't hurt them too much. This is also a classic example of why managers like to have LH and RH hitters alternating as much as possible. I would put the blame squarely on the Yankee FO for the bullpen issues. Letting Logan go was another example of their odd penny-pinching in the midst of their megadeals. This is one reason I think they were making it up as they went along this offseason.
  16. I thought the Yankees did a terrible job with their bullpen in the offseason and it's starting to show. The only defence for replacing Logan with the washed-up Thornton is that they saved a few bucks. And for the Yankees that's no defence at all. Thornton throws 94-96 but his command is awful.
  17. First game of the Subway Series was a doozy indeed.
  18. Matt Thornton is looking more and more like the curious signing I thought he was. His WHIP is 1.67 now. It was 1.76 with the Sox last year.
  19. Horse Face Lackey backs up Filthy Rich Horse Lester. Great job by both.
  20. John Lackey = Horse Face Jon Lester = Horse Getting Richer Sewer Horse = M.I.A.
  21. Hopefully he didn't mean Nava playing centre.
  22. Buchholz is one of the big differences from 2013, no question. But how about this: we're averaging 4.03 runs per game, compared to 5.27 last year. 1.24 runs a game less. 4.03 runs a game! That's third worst in the league. We're being outscored by Seattle so far.
  23. I liked the thought. But this game will really f*** you up LOL
