    The problem with the idea is what I bolded. I'm pretty sure the Red Sox are going to make the kind of moves that at least give them a chance on paper to be a playoff team. They're not going to send a message that they're already looking beyond 2015. I'm taking the PR component into account.

    No offence, but that'd be crazy. Lincecum has been very bad for 3 consecutive seasons. He had a 4.74 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP last year. And SF has a pitcher-friendly park. On top of that, he makes $18 million next year.

    Miller had a great season, especially after being traded, but $40 million for a reliever with 1 career save seems insane to me.

    I loved those late 70's teams especially. But the thing that was crushing was never being able to win it all, of course. The new ownership has delivered championships. The championships completed me as a Sox fan. The loyalty was finally rewarded. That's why I'm still loyal to them. 700hitter, are you a Red Sox season ticket holder? Season ticket holders fall into a special category for me. They are the real financial supporters of the team.

    I think everybody and their dog knows the Sox have to acquire 2 good starters for 2015.

    The question is, can a team like the Marlins afford to break the bank for one player? Their total payroll for 2014 was less than $50 million. Stanton will be looking for around $30 million per, which means he'll be taking up about half the annual payroll. It leaves them little money to spend anywhere else.

    I think what they're doing is two things: 1) Confirming that there's no way they can meet his demands; 2) The PR thing you're suggesting. It's the only thing they can do, really. Things are setting up for him to be traded by this year's deadline.

    We shouldn't really have to argue as much as we do about who's a #1 or a #2 etc. If the guy is in the top 20% statistically he's a #1. The next 20% are #2's etc.

    You're not getting under my skin at all, trust me. It's called disagreeing. We freed up a ton of money with that deal, and we won a World Series with guys that were signed with some of the money. That's a pretty big positive right there that you seem to be completely dismissing. Most Sox fans feel the AGon trade was a huge benefit for the team. Your position is in the minority.

    Yes, I know exactly what you can do, believe me LOL. But 'in the end, they didn't trade an unproven prospect for proven talent'? You can do a lot better than that.

    Your deal proposal is a reasonable one. You could look at the actual deal as 12 million for Year 1 and 6 million for Year 2.

    Let's compare Bogaerts's rookie season with Dwight Evans's 1973 rookie season. Dewey also struggled out of the gate. He was better than Bogaerts but not by a big margin. Bogaerts PA 594 240/297/362 660 OPS 85 OPS+ 12 HR 46 RBI For Fred, numbers with RISP PA 143 153/211/218 Evans PA 328 223/320/383 703 OPS 93 OPS+ 10 HR 32 RBI Numbers with RISP PA 106 184/305/287

    If a $9 million AAV player fails it's not great but it's not going to kill you either.

    But some of the worst flak toward A-Gon has been about his attitude. He has taken a pounding for the 'God's will' stuff. People used that to give him heat about 2011 even though he had a great month that September. I'm just throwing s*** out there for argument's sake.

    Stanton could be the same type of player for all we know - a great compiler of stats who doesn't thrive in the spotlight of Boston. To acquire him we'd have to package off some of our best prospects, and to keep him long term we'd have to give him close to 300 million. Not that I wouldn't love to have him, but the risk would be out of this world, especially when you factor in the possibility that he might be an 'A-Gon' type personality.

    I don't know, I think he's getting a bit of a bad rap here. He was a rock solid producer for the Dodgers this year. Kershaw was the guy who really let them down in the playoff series.
