    The Jays upgraded their offence, yes. The Yankees didn't, as far as I can see. Baltimore downgraded. Overall, it's a wash.

    Let's have a reality check on the ALE - it ain't what it used to be. Last year the other 4 teams in the ALE averaged 4.13 runs per game. League average was 4.18.

    There's so much stuff that happens in baseball that completely defies logic. Look at Oakland last year. On July 31 they were 66-41. In August and September, after acquiring Lester and the two guys from the Cubs, they went 22-33. Unfathomable.

    Preseason prognostications always bring out the philosopher in me. What were the preseason odds on SF and KC last year? What were the odds on the Red Sox in 2013? I wish somebody would keep track of the preseason calls and compare them to the actual results. But nobody does it because it would make the whole concept of preseason picks look foolish. It would also be pretty tedious. Nobody knows s***, and your guess is as good as mine.

    Free agency changed everything, no doubt. And it was what the players wanted all along. Human nature doesn't change over time, IMO, just environment changes.

    I don't think it's all about ego, though it's certainly a factor. There's also the fact that the player has other voices in his ear - his family, his agent, the Players Association etc. And if a guy does take a significantly below-market deal, there will be a few stories that he was an idiot for doing so.

    I think Lester conducted himself like a stand-up guy all the way. He didn't say one negative thing about anybody.

    It looks that way to me too. It was nice of Henry to pay him that last visit, but did he really expect Lester to take $20 million less to play for him?

    Cherington made some comments later to the effect of being surprised and disappointed that Lester's agents hadn't come back to them with anything after the $70 million offer. It all seems a little disingenuous, especially when they would eventually offer him $135 million.

    What I've read a few times now is that the Sox aren't interested in Shields because he's a fly ball pitcher. The Sox are keeping it on the ground this year.

    Yes, I always get a chuckle when people criticize Ortiz for not going the other way more against the shift. As if they know what it's like trying to hit major league fastballs and junk. I think the big fella does pretty good overall!

    Don't you think it's a little strange that they made offers ranging from $70 million to $135 million, Kimmi?

    I think Crawford (142 million) and the A-Gon extension (154 million) were a little more than just 'lapses', Kimmi. I also think the non-retention of Lester is kind of a statement. This is a guy they would have kept if it was 5 years earlier, IMO.

    The Sox negotiations with Lester were flat-out weird from start to finish. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that they never really wanted to re-sign him because of their current thinking on big contracts for pitchers his age. But then you had those visits to his house by Henry in the latter stages - what was that all about? When it came down to it Lester eliminated all teams except the Cubs and the Sox. But the Cubs offer was $20 million higher and the Sox wouldn't budge. Who the hell knows what they were thinking at that point? About that opening offer though. Lester was clearly insulted by it and with good reason, when you look at all the circumstances. On Feb. 19 the Reds signed a deal with Homer Bailey for 6 years and $105 million. The Red Sox offer was exactly two-thirds of that.

    The Yankees philosophy on long term deals has certainly been hurting them the last few years especially. It remains to be seen if the current Red Sox philosophy on long term deals will result in sustained success or not - or even if they'll maintain it.

    Fred. Carpenter, Beato, Ohlendorf, Silva, Hottovy, and Bonser? You named 6 guys who pitched a grand total of 29.2 innings for the Red Sox. Ohlendorf and Silva never saw the uniform. Bonser pitched 2 innings in blowout games. Hottovy - 4 innings. The only one who was more than a blip was Beato, who racked up 17.2 innings with a 4.08 ERA. Not one of those 6 guys hurt us.

    How you achieve a strong back end of the pen may vary and may not be that important. But getting it somehow can be pretty important. Ask the Tigers. Their failure in having a good back end of the pen has cost them dearly.

    The best part is, we've got over 2 months more of pre-season prognostications to look forward to.

    It's not easy, sure. But last year we saw Lester and Price move at the deadline, and not for earth-shaking amounts of talent. And just because the Sox haven't done it in a while doesn't mean they wouldn't do it this year.
