    It's not that bad, really, once you get used to it. There is a group of smart posters and there are also some idiots. Pumpsie booted a few of the real trolls.

    The only thing that can break the chain is for people to keep personal insults out of their posts. It's actually not that hard to do. But face it, UN, some guys like to scrap. They want to get the better of that other guy who pisses them off. That's why this stuff never ends.

    We need a new separate thread for people to jibber-jabber about other posters. All you need is a 'cover title' that gets the ball rolling. Like 'Are you an optimistic fan or a pessimistic fan?' Then sit back and watch all hell break loose.

    Also, I wish I could have seen video of Lucchino at the meeting with Teixiera and Boras. There were rumors that he really went off. I have this picture of him grabbing for Boras's throat when he realizes Boras has brought them there to tell them it's the Yankees who'll be signing his client.

    The quotes from George S. on Lucchino are classic, hilarious. Without looking it up, I'm pretty sure he went on record to warn John Henry about Larry with stuff like this: 'Watch your back, John. This is not a guy you want in your foxhole.' And of course it was Larry with the 'Evil Empire' stuff.

    I back Lucchino to a certain extent because he's part of the group that brought us 3 titles. He's also the guy who was responsible for Theo being hired in the first place. I think he's probably done some dumb s***, too.

    Absolutely. And now we have a new storyline on Koji, with $18 million invested in him.

    Setting aside Papelbon entirely here, you're correct that the Sox threw away quite a bit of money on Jenks, Hanrahan and Bailey for next to nothing (except Brock Holt). The Jenks signing in particular was a disaster. $12 million minus $1 million they eventually recovered in a settlement I believe.

    The Phillies have been conducting themselves like idiots the last few years though. They should have traded Cliff Lee before this too. Now they're hanging onto Hamels.

    Billy Beane is still without a title. He does have the honor of being the only GM to have been played by Brad Pitt in a movie, though.

    Some of the statistical analysis helped, no doubt. But having one of the highest payrolls and being able to acquire guys like Schilling and Foulke to complement the big talent already in place sure did too.

    No matter how much information you have at your disposal, the performance of some players will be extremely difficult to predict, regardless of injuries. No one could have predicted how bad Crawford would be in 2011, and no one can exactly explain it, either. Some guys are just extremely erratic - like Buchholz and Masterson - and no one is sure exactly why. Some guys 'lose it' and then get it back, like Lester - possibly because of an adjustment in mechanics. I would love to see someone here try to predict the final 2015 numbers for our current rotation. If your numbers are way off because of injury, you get a complete pass, of course.

    UN, you said 'over a larger sample, advanced statistics can pretty accurately predict what a player will do.' Then you said 'in the end, there's just no foolproof way to accurately predict what a player(s) is (are) going to do in the future.' ???

    It's a good question. With some exceptions, the future performance of baseball players remains very difficult to predict. Carl Crawford's stats going into 2011 didn't justify $142 million, but they sure made him look like a premier all-around player.
