    I haven't found the article, but I'm pretty sure that some short-term BABIP's are simply unsustainable, period, such as the .395 Holt had at the All-Star Break.

    Fred, what did Farrell do wrong in the ninth? He got Bogaerts to sacrifice, successfully, and he pinch hit Nava for Middlebrooks. Where exactly did Farrell cost us there?

    Ben probably tosses and turns some nights thinking about Buch and what to do about him. There's always that possibility that the guy finally gets it together, and you'd hate to see him doing that in another team's uniform after trading him for not much. Like it or not he'll be part of the 2015 opening day rotation.

    Farrell's not getting fired. Cherington has already accepted a lot of the blame for this year's performance. The only way Farrell would get fired, IMO, is if there's some friction behind the scenes we don't know about. It won't be because of the 2014 W-L record.

    I'm not going to try to debate Farrell's managerial abilities. I try to stay away from that stuff, most of it is up for endless debate. But I can't see how having a .500 record in one-run games this year, when the overall record is 61-77, reflects badly on the manager. There's a lot of randomness in one-run games anyway.

    Sox are 25-25 in one run games (huge number, I know). Their Pythagorean record is identical to their actual record. So there's nothing in the stats to point a finger at Farrell. The Yankees are on the way to beating their Pythagorean record 2 years in a row, which is very unusual. Not sure it'll be much consolation if they miss the playoffs both years.

    Check out these bizarre nuggets: The Sox have been one-hit twice in 10 days, Aug 21 and Aug 30. Both times, WMB got the only hit. Both times, WMB was on the bench to start the game and came in when somebody got hurt. Also, the Sox have been one-hit 3 times in a little over a month (July 24 vs. Jays, Victorino got the only hit.) Too much.

    The Red Sox have demonstrated once again that they're willing to make some fairly aggressive moves in the attempt to improve the product. $70 million plus for Castillo is not chump change. But they need results and fast. 2015 cannot be a losing season. 3 out of 4 losing seasons for a team with their resources really would be an embarrassment.

    Kelly was on an 85 pitch count because of the shoulder twinge he had the previous game.

    Only 43% of Frank Thomas's career PA's came when he was playing first base. I'd say the DH door has been kicked more than halfway open.

    I don't disagree with this, but I don't think it'll happen. Not because of Paps's ability but because of potential clubhouse issues. The Sox probably regret the Pierzynski signing. As we know, Paps can ruffle feathers when he opens his mouth.

    I am guessing fatigue is probably the culprit with Koji rather than injury.

    I have not posted here much lately, but it's not because I'm not following the team just as closely. I don't think the fact that someone is or isn't posting on a message board necessarily reflects their interest in the team or their dedication or their level of suffering, whatever the case may be. I think message boards are one of those things you should only participate in if you enjoy it. Personally, my problem is not so much that I can't think of anything good to say lately, it's that I can't think of anything interesting. But there's also a disheartened component to it too. Watching all the losses pile up can just take it out of you after a while.

    Personally I find the comments about Lester being pissed kind of amusing. Partly for the reasons you mentioned, partly because he knows somebody is going to be paying him $120 million or more starting next year.

    But with Lavarnway, the standard knock was that they held him back, or bounced him around too much - the totally opposite criticism of what we're hearing on Bogaerts and Bradley. I think the truth is that Lavarnway was just never good enough.

    Better than McCann's 1.2 and Beltran's -0.1 though.

    Fred Lynn, of course, made some fantastic plays in centre. I can still remember a catch he made on a Saturday Game of the Week. He sprinted to the wall, caught the ball over the fence and flipped his glove back in the same motion. They used the play in the highlight clip for Game of the Week for a while.

    The Red Sox do have salary constraints though. Even the Yankees have salary constraints. They let their best player walk. I'm not sure people fully realize what a big development in baseball economics it was the day the Yankees decided to say goodbye to Cano.

    Webster gave up 3 earned runs in 6 innings. He wasn't great, but he wasn't horrible. Kind of a treading water performance.
