  1. This is a very debatable point. Some players have a history of having trouble staying healthy, like Buchholz, Kelly, and Hanley. I'm not saying this is what the Red Sox did, but if you fill your team with old guys and guys with major injury histories and/or known health issues, you can hardly say that having a lot of injuries will be just bad luck.
  2. Here are some comparisons between Ellsbury and Ortiz for 2013: Ellsbury 636 PA's With 2 outs and 0 on - 67 10.5% With men on base - 225 35.4% With bases empty - 411 64.6% With RISP - 133 20.9% Ortiz 600 PA's With 2 outs and 0 on - 68 11.3% With men on base - 328 54.7% With bases empty - 272 45.3% With RISP - 192 32.0% So while Ortiz did come up more often with 2 outs and 0 on, he also had far more PA's with men on base and RISP.
  3. These are all plausible arguments. But when a team has one of the top payrolls in the game and wins 71 games and then 78 games, there is something very wrong somewhere that goes beyond luck. I hate to bring the Evil Ones into it, but they haven't finished under .500 since 1992. And they've had their share of issues in recent years. Maybe it's the managers, maybe Girardi is much better than Farrell, I don't know.
  4. I always assumed that one of the biggest reasons lineups were structured the way they are is to give you a chance to have a big first inning. Obviously if Papi leads off he's never going to have a chance to hit with men on base in the first inning. So I am surprised.
  5. Nice metaphorical tie-ins with the Achilles, victory lap and finish line.
  6. The FanGraphs projected standings are merely a product of their player WAR projections, aren't they?
  7. Porcello...now this is a fresh topic. One of the arguments advanced on behalf of the Porcello extension is that we paid a premium in annual salary in exchange for a discount in years. The extension price looks bad at the moment. Porcello could make it look a lot better this year. Or he could make it look doubly stupid.
  8. But as a guy on another forum used to point out, he would never go on the DL. (Up until his last year with us anyway.) Ah, J. D. Drew...I think it's true he was an underachiever, but when he was in the lineup and on his game, he was a very talented ballplayer who helped you win games.
  9. I think some of the data sources like FanGraphs provide can be very useful if used properly and in conjunction with other information.
  10. That's beyond nuts. More like diabolical. Especially using 4 7's like that.
  11. I wasn't necessarily ascribing that to you. It was just a general observation. You're reading way too much into it.
  12. Nope, I assume no such thing. Neither does Kimmi - in fact, just a few posts above she said 'GM's get fired for any number for reasons'.
  13. That's great stuff about Remy...certainly makes my opinion of him go way up.
  14. Yes, it's a fact that Ben was fired. And I supported the decision. But getting fired doesn't necessarily prove you're a bad GM. If it did, it would mean we hired a bad (de facto) GM to replace Ben.
  15. That's pretty cool.
  16. I agree, but I'll take it a step further. Betting with Vegas on sports will break most people no matter what system they use. Betting is one of the stupidest things people do. The house wins. When you play poker with your friends at least it's a zero-sum game.
  17. I agree, the hypocrisy is incredible. DraftKings and FanDuel are obviously gambling, and they are taking a lot of suckers' money, based on the amount of advertising they've been doing.
  18. I can't even talk about that guy any more.
  19. Nobody can predict baseball that accurately.
  20. We also have to keep in mind, the Sox are well over the tax cap and paying 30% tax on every additional dollar they spend now.
  21. You don't necessarily need a legit #2. The Royals just won 95 games and the World Series without one.
  22. But she just attributed Porcello and the Lackey trade to Ben.
  23. Did you get a Jokes About Fat People book for Christmas or something?
