  1. The other side of the coin is that we already have a new system where umps' missed calls are being corrected on a regular basis, and it doesn't seem to be hurting anything.
  2. Everyone who is advocating automated balls & strikes is well aware of the fact that it would cost us calls as well. We all know Vazquez is a good 'pitch-framer'. I think you're quite wrong about what the intent is.
  3. If the 13% error rate is accurate, there are about 3 dozen blown calls per game.
  4. I've made up my mind. I fully support an automated strike zone. Screwups like the JBJ at-bat with 2 blatantly wrong calls out of 4 are totally unacceptable.
  5. The only question is how he's doing with the pitching staff. Hard to say.
  6. Extending the replay reviews to balls and strikes is probably the most we'll see in the next decade. There is a lot of resistance to robots.
  7. I was at Fenway in 1975 with a friend who was a big Yankee fan. We were there before a game with the Yankees and Catfish Hunter walked over close to where we were. My friend asked if he could take his picture. Catfish smiled and said 'Sure, I just hope I don't crack your camera' or something like that.' He was cool.
  8. I can't even talk about Buchholz any more. He's Bastard 1 to me now. I just can't believe we decided he needed a baby brother.
  9. But in the JBJ at-bat that I posted the GameDay screen freeze of, there were two pitches clearly well outside the strike zone that were both called strikes. Not borderline at all. Those are the ones that are really aggravating.
  10. No more central than safe-out calls, which are now subject to review.
  11. Porcello's 2016 numbers are those of a #3 starter at worst. A #3 starter is by definition an average starter. Porcello has an ERA+ of 116, so it's 16% better than league average when taking Park Factor into account.
  12. Jays may end up being more of a problem than O's.
  13. Don't close to your mind to the possibility of pleasant surprises.
  14. Pointlessly pessimistic prognostication.
  15. If he continues to slump he'll be moved down. Management has more patience than the fans. That's usually a good thing.
  16. Farrell likes the L-R-L thing with Papi-Hanley-JBJ.
  17. I don't disagree with any of that. What I'm mainly saying is that at first glance the numbers look like crap. I think what it shows is that sometimes you really have to dig a little deeper into the numbers. We had an outstanding bullpen that year as well.
  18. Our pitching stats for 2007 have always fascinated me. If all you did was look at the stats for the starting rotation and someone told you we led the league in ERA and won the World Series, you'd swear it was ********. Because aside from Beckett the numbers range from mediocre to horrible.
  19. I think even georom would have little to complain about.
  20. The Cubs starting rotation is putting up amazing numbers thus far. All 5 have made all their starts. The highest ERA is 2.90. 4 of the 5 have a WHIP under 1. The bullpen has nice numbers too.
  21. Also, it's not meaningful to say that the best hitters fail 7 times out of 10. The best hitters in history have actually only failed 6 times out of 10, if you consider getting on base a success, which you should. Furthermore, the odds are stacked to a ridiculous degree against the hitter. He not only has to beat the pitcher but 8 fielders. That is a lopsided contest.
  22. Here's the GameDay capture of Bradley's AB. 2 strike calls that were indisputable balls. That's a 50% error rate on one AB.
  23. They're a couple of incorrigible jokers, Kimmi. Just ignore it. It's not directed at you personally anyway, it's directed at the opposing side of the debate in general.
  24. Priceless! (Definitely no pun intended.)
