  1. True. It was 2012 when he started to really tail off. Power expectations for him were a bit inflated I guess. People thought if he could hit 30-40 HRs a year in San Diego, you could bump that to 35-45 in a better hitting environment.
  2. Those are multi-season fWARs?
  3. FanGraphs has calculated Yoshida's worth in free agent dollars as : 2023 $4.9 million 2024 $6.4 million
  4. He's talking about the analytics on the pitching side: We have been heading here for years via the metric revolution. It became understood that all pitchers should throw it harder, spin it more and max out on every pitch. That has led to both more injuries and shorter starts. The shorter starts are due to not holding back anything pitch to pitch for a marathon. And why hold back? Many starters these days are not allowed to go around a lineup more than twice —sometimes once this time of year.
  5. When Stanton is hitting like this the Yankees are a very tough lineup. A pretty Captain Obvious observation, I know.
  6. Copying this link to article by Joel Sherman on how analytics is shredding pitching staffs, because: a) No one is paying much attention to that thread on The Future of Baseball, perhaps because of where it's situated; b) This thread has been temporarily re-purposed as the 2024 Postseason Thread; and c) I don't think moderators should devote undue time to moving posts around. Trying to get Talksox posters to follow posting rules would be like trying to herd cats. 😀 https://nypost.com/2024/10/18/sports/mlb-bullpens-appear-to-be-reaching-a-breaking-point/
  7. I remember AGon had shoulder surgery, and his power dipped noticeably from what it was with San Diego.
  8. My Sox pessimism is running amuck these days.
  9. I suppose throwing 74 innings of 100 MPH cutters might cause higher than normal arm fatigue...
  10. That would support the tired arm theory on him at least...
  11. Agree on Weaver and Homes, but Clase only pitched in Games 3 and 4. Considering what an amazing season Clase had, yeah, this has been a tad surprising to me. But it's baseball and that explains just about everything...
  12. I like your cynicism. I'm not sure if it's juiced balls or tired pitching arms, but these LCS games have been nutty.
  13. Pretty good article by Joel Sherman on how analytics is shredding pitching staffs. https://nypost.com/2024/10/18/sports/mlb-bullpens-appear-to-be-reaching-a-breaking-point/
  14. Nope, with his bum shoulder(s) Raffy's got virtually the same problem as Yoshida, 2025-wise.
  15. Yes, we traded away a pitcher who had a 6 win season, and those 6 wins would have put us in. But we're talking about where we stand for 2025. How do we get those 6 more wins? By signing Burnes and Fried? And we also have to replace Pivetta/Jansen/Martin/O'Neill. We're really not "just about there" barring Anthony and Campbell being instant stars and Brez pulling rabbits out of his hat IMHO. I'm afraid we're still in the position that our head coach, JH, thinks we need to punt again.
  16. Yeah, the surgery basically takes him off the table for now.
  17. That's some fine Pollyannalytics, sir! Comparing Yoshida's possible to Schwarber's real, and tossing out games played, Park Factor etc! Well done!
  18. I'd argue that playing .400 ball after the ASB does not really suggest being "there", unless we're using Advanced Pollyannalytics...
  19. For all we know, Brez was forced to deal Sale - maybe not directly, but because of the budget - which would be not be all that different from Bloom being forced to deal Betts. Can't take anything for granted with this bunch.
  20. Let's face it, this is just one more reason for them to punt again. "Things just didn't line up for us this year, but there will come a time they do, and it's coming soon." - Sam Kennedy, January, 2025.
  21. Classic. 😁
  22. We're here because we're obsessive.
  23. Wow. Closin' ain't easy, as Denny says. Last night's Yankee-Cleveland thriller came on the 20th anniversary of Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS!
