  1. Those who say we don't necessarily need a good bat may in fact be correct. But I would rather err on the side of more offense this year. Those who say we could really use another starting pitcher are right, too.
  2. Our anthem is very boring.
  3. Take it for what it's worth, but I think my city of Halifax is probably the most American-like city in Canada. We're sort of like a shrunken-down version of Boston. As far as baseball loyalty is concerned, I'm quite sure the Red Sox are #1 here, with the Blue Jays and Yankees in a battle for #2.
  4. Annoying accent, eh?
  5. Nunez isn't really versatile though. The only thing he does well is hit the ball. Not that I wouldn't mind having him back if the price is right.
  6. Patience can be a virtue, but what big bat is going to be available once all the FA's are signed and the season starts? The supply is limited.
  7. Probably the fairest way to look at the Bogey-Machado thing is the 2018 projected fWAR: Bogey 3.6 Machado 6.3 So that's a 2.7 differential for Machado.
  8. Fair point, although by today's standards if you get a DH who can put up 4 WAR each year he's earning his 25 mill. It certainly highlights what a fantastic bargain Mr. Ortiz was.
  9. If we go status quo and narrowly miss the playoffs that would be really bad, especially where it puts us one big fat year closer to the bad thing.
  10. I'll bet you're not glad we didn't sign him to an extension of say 6/120 though.
  11. I think there are a couple of reasons Boras is somewhat of a 'target'. One is that he's a figure of power in the baseball economy. Another is that he has celebrity - some of which he has deliberately sought out, with his arguably grandstanding public statements.
  12. IMHO we shouldn't make sweeping generalizations about players, agents, executives, whoever. They're all individuals. Some are slimeballs and some are fine people.
  13. Wow, that is wicked cold.
  14. Deep freeze is right. Right now it's 7 degrees Fahrenheit outside here with a wind chill of -11.
  15. Yes, that'd be great. But since it's impossible, the next best thing is our own wild, often unfounded and unrealistic speculation.
  16. I'm optimistic too, in fact I'll be pretty shocked if something major doesn't happen.
  17. I'm having a little back and forth with Kimmi about the wisdom of signing 30 year old pitchers to 6 or 7 year deals. As for JDM, yes, hopefully we'll sign him for 5 years. Obviously he and Boras are in the waiting game now and hoping someone cracks and goes to 6 years. If we come out of this offseason without some sort of major acquisition, whether it be a hitter or a pitcher, it'll be disappointing.
  18. Well, if Theo thought it was OK to sign Lester for 6 years it can't be the worst idea in the world *sometimes* to risk it...
  19. Even in hindsight you wouldn't sign Scherzer? The actual cost of his contract in present dollars was around $195 million, I think. FanGraphs says he's already earned $144 million of that.
  20. Not even Scherzer?
  21. What? I'm shocked.
  22. It might change soon, but so far it's been the all-time snoozefest.
  23. The thing is, what happened to Bard-'Steve Blass syndrome' has only happened to a handful of pitchers in history. This was an extremely rare case.
  24. The population of players is much larger.
  25. To me he stands for greed, getting every last dollar, and escalating baseball salaries as high into the stratosphere as possible. It's just my personal feelings, nothing more. And I fully realize that the owners are men of greed as well.
