  1. Bumping this thread as a reminder of reactions at the time.
  2. I don't think Steve Pearce merchandise is a big seller either.
  3. I don't think so. That would be a crazy way to operate. Would also have signed Joe Kelly if that was SOP.
  4. As you have pointed out there's a strong chance JDM doesn't opt out after Year 2 anyway. And Mookie seems determined not to sign an extension.
  5. Pearce and Pedroia I would agree. Nunez and Holt might be back if cheap. DD obviously likes them both and Cora seems to really like Nunez. Moreland might be back too. Stranger things have happened. In any case I think we'll be fine in all those spots.
  6. Interestingly enough, over the course of his career Fred was a minus defensive player. Even in his early years his defensive ratings were not that good.
  7. I don't see how the fact they each had a terrible stretch of 130 PA's to start a season makes them a valid comp.
  8. But did you know this? In 1995 after 130 plate appearances he had an OPS of 454. JBJ is currently at 133 plate appearances.
  9. Just to expand on this a bit... If you're interested in Vegas and gambling and oddsmaking, Casino is a great read. It was of course made into a movie with DeNiro, Pesci and Sharon Stone. The characters played by DeNiro and Pesci were based on Lefty Rosenthal and Tony Spilotro. In the early days of Vegas Rosenthal was one of the guys who really instituted big-time sports betting, and he was considered to be a very astute oddsmaker. Spilotro meanwhile had a bit of a gambling problem, and he would try to hit Lefty up for some hot tips. Lefty's advice was always the same: don't bet.
  10. They don't know any more about what's going to happen in games or seasons than you or I or any other informed fan. They know how to set odds and spreads. They're very good at what they do, I'm not saying they aren't.
  11. Fangraphs is not an opinion but an automatic statistical calculation. It's useless. But so are the Vegas odds. No one knows s***.
  12. Either has JBJ, unless you're counting partial season numbers.
  13. Did Porcello bad-mouth Vazquez? I missed that.
  14. That's just looking for questions if you ask me. How can it be a problem to have elite fielders in both center and right?
  15. The last 2 games Bradley has 2 hits and 2 walks. I know I'm a JBJ Pollyanna, but I try to find encouragement in such things.
  16. You could also question pulling CC after only 76 pitches for Holder.
  17. I'm a Moreland fan. He's off to a hell of a start.
  18. He's had a pretty good last 3 games, starting with the game-saving catch in Baltimore.
  19. TW's numbers are truly mind-boggling.
  20. Yes, in 1968 Boomer put up 171/236/237 for an 2019 JBJ'esque OPS of 473. It was the Year of the Pitcher, of course.
  21. Certainly not. I'm just talking about the whiff factor that goes with today's launch angle.
  22. Today's upper-cut or launch angle is producing lots of homers and an incredible rate of whiffs. I'm pretty sure Ted wouldn't like the approach we're seeing now.
  23. Price is supposedly coming back shortly. You know the story on Eovaldi. Sale seems to be fine again. We need these guys healthy, that's for sure.
  24. Although he did hit a game-winning 12th inning HR just the game before, so there's that.
