It's not really that bad of a mess from a strictly financial aspect. The worst contract on the books is Price's which we all know the negative value of. Bloom could clean things up in a jiffy if it was a less demanding fanbase he was dealing with.

I joined the NYYFans board just because it gives me one more place to go when I'm bored LOL. I post infrequently there and only on general baseball stuff. It's definitely tight-ass. A place like that makes you appreciate a place like this, where you can really let it all hang out.

Based on the latest blurb on MLBTR, the Astros are defending their actions on the basis that the camera they were using was already there, not something specially installed for this purpose. Sounds like they are also intimating that other teams have been doing the same type of thing.

The fact is that to obtain a pitcher of Cole's caliber on the free agent market, that was what you had to do. Reportedly the Angels and Dodgers were willing to go 8 years at the same rate and drew the line there. The Yanks went to 9 to win the auction. We're lucky in a sense that the Angels and Dodgers were there to push the Yanks to this level. If I was a Yankee fan I'd be very happy to have Cole, while also very aware that at some point this will be an albatross. It's just the way it works.

The bottom line on Perez is that the deep analytics show he pitched better than his ERA last year, and $6 mill is a reasonable price. It's exactly the type of signing Bloom should have been expected to make.
