  1. I don't anyone will change their tune until we see Chris in real games. But it seems like encouraging news.
  2. Hopefully Bloom will be just the guy to do it.
  3. There's the rub, eh? Red Sox fans have less to complain about than any other franchise this century. But still we moan and groan quite a bit.
  4. As Dewey says, nothing can top a decade that had 2004 in it. But 2010-2019 was a very admirable sequel. And 2018 was the dream season.
  5. I suspect that the Red Sox are hoping that Bloom can follow in the footsteps of the previous Rays wunderkind, Andrew Friedman, who has been doing a great job for the wealthy Dodgers.
  6. There won't be much incoming if they're really trying to get below 208 mill.
  7. MLBTR rates JBJ as the 4th most likely player to be traded this offseason. You'll have to settle for that for now.
  8. I think the issue is that the Sox first objective is to subtract payroll, not add it.
  9. I might be getting this mixed up with the trade for Verlander?
  10. All of that is based on best case scenario, of course. I hope Mookie has a long, healthy career, but anything can happen in this game. It doesn't even have to be a disaster-type injury that derails a man's career. Sometimes it can be the so-called 'nagging' injuries that do it.
  11. So true. Yankee fans bemoan the (alleged) fact that they could have gotten Cole from the Pirates prior to the 2018 season, but Cashman balked because the Bucs wanted Chance Adams and Clint Frazier.
  12. No. Because those trade values are based on the years of control the team has. Mookie's trade value is 'only' 50 mill because he's only under control for one year. Devers is under control for 4 more years.
  13. Well, that says a lot about what an overpay his contract is. And I suspect that after Year One of Mookie's next contract there will be a negative value.
  14. Can you just tell me? I'm staying away from that web site, I waste enough time as it is.
  15. The simulator doesn't take into account the risk factor of paying a guy that much for that long.
  16. I do see your point, but I just can't see them basing such a huge decision on that.
  17. In other (non) news, Chris Sale has still not that had that second visit to the doc. They may have to strap him up like Hannibal Lecter to get him there.
  18. It makes the whole equation pretty simple. Don't trade him. Trade him at the deadline, if we're out of it. That's simple too.
  19. Those amounts are significant, no question. And they could get you a worthwhile player or two, hopefully. But they're not significant to the issue of signing Mookie or not.
  20. What do you mean, $9 mil per year? Even if you re-set, your rate goes back up to 30% in year 2 and 50% in year 3 after the re-set. You can only save for 2 years max.
  21. Your math is off. The difference between a 50% rate and a 20% rate is 30%. That's part of the problem here - the math is a real challenge!
  22. I don't get that feeling. I think one of the reasons Henry is such a smart and successful owner is that he never forgets where all the money is coming from - the fans. The last thing he wants to do is save $20 million in payroll if it's going to cost him $50 million in revenue.
  23. If we go over the limit in 2020 by 10 or 20 mill it's not a big deal IMO. (Easy for me to say, I know.) Let's say they go over by 15 mill. That's 7.5 mill in tax. Which would be less tax than they paid in 2018 or 2019. My problem is with the idea that if we re-set in 2020 it will put us in great shape to sign Mookie. I really don't think so. If his demands are exorbitant, the re-set makes little difference.
  24. He's now playing the role Lucchino used to play.
