Beeks had a 6.49 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP after the ASB last year. I don't think he's actually all that good.

No, I was riding the gravy train like everyone else. I don't think DD did a bad job, personally. But I still like the move to Bloom at this point.

The four WS wins have taken the sting out for me. I just find it's impossible to resist revisiting those occasions. You certainly don't forget them or how tragic they seemed at the time. The 1978 playoff game was the worst for me. I was crushed.

I think when push comes to shove, MLB players know they have it pretty damn good compared to other pro athletes, regardless of the PR rhetoric.

It has declined marginally. 2017 4.45 2018 4.41 2019 4.38 I'll bet anything it's higher in 2020 than in 2019. The highest contract for a pitcher just went from 217 mill to 324 mill. And look at the arb raises Mookie and E-Rod are expected to get. The younger players thing is being offset a lot by the higher arb salaries.

For those who would have left Pedro in, let's say he did get Posada out on that pitch. He's at 123 pitches with still 4 more outs to get, and the next hitter was Giambi, who has homered twice in the game. Would you leave Pedro in to face Giambi?

Let's see what the average salary is for 2020. I'm guessing it will be the highest ever after this offseason's signings and arb raises.

It can be debated until doomsday, I guess. But Posada's hit was on Pedro's 123rd pitch of the night, and it was the Yankees 4th hit in a row. Jeter's double might have been misplayed by Nixon. But the single by Williams was solidly struck, and the double by Matsui was a rocket.

It's my personal belief that the main reason DD was replaced is because we need a rebuilder now.

I don't think that's quite accurate. Henry has spent big on the team pretty much since Day One, and has done very well by it. 4 titles and a very robust increase in the value of the asset. He has nothing to complain about and neither do we. No other GM's have done better than Henry's Red Sox GM's.

There's no way to win though. Henry doesn't say much, but every little thing he says about the team or the payroll or the tax is like a huge bucket of chum tossed into a shark pool. If he talked more it would only be worse.

It's all about cost. The MLB pay system and tax system has created a situation where the cost of your talent can rise by multiples in a short time without you doing anything. 2018 AAV's: Chris Sale 12.5 Mookie Betts 10.5 Xander Bogaerts 7.05 JBJ 6.1 E-Rod 2.375 Total 38.525 Avg 7.705 2020 AAV's including arb projections: Chris Sale 25.6 Mookie Betts 27.5 Xander Bogaerts 20 JBJ 11.5 E-Rod 9 Total 93.6 Avg 18.72 So for these 5 players, the cost is 250% as high 2 years later. And the initial luxury tax rate is also 250% as high (from 20 to 50). It's a system that makes keeping a good team together for even a short period very difficult, no matter how rich or smart you are or how much planning you do.

Other teams know the Red Sox are looking to cut payroll. But they also know the Red Sox aren't looking to do them a favor. So they have to make a fair offer or it's no deal. Simple as that.
