  1. Peter Gammons @pgammo Three different NL folks today predicted Betts-to-L.A. is "inevitable." Consensus deal:Alex Verdugo, Inf Jeter Downs, pitcher, maybe A prospect. Think P is LH Caleb Ferguson, 95 MPH FB/CB guy, 113-39 K-BB in 93.1 IP, eventual starter.
  2. That's a whole other debate.
  3. So what you're really saying is that the people who run the teams are stupid, and that an opt-out might save the team from its own stupidity through sheer luck.
  4. It's the old prizefighter syndrome. They don't quit till it's too late. Why? Because combat is their life.
  5. And in the case that the player could get more money on the open market, you'd be better off having him because you'd be able to trade him. Thus it's a fallacy that the player opting out benefits you.
  6. Well, I agree with 700hitter (I think) - all things equal, opt outs are not a plus for the team.
  7. 700hitter's point comes into effect if the guy has a strong year before the opt-out decision. Then you would be hoping for him to opt in, because in theory he'd be tradeable for at least as much as what was left on his contract.
  8. I didn't say that. mvp said we were similar to 2018.
  9. They're trying to trade Price too, of course.
  10. We're not spending a dime on the bullpen, for the second year in a row. That's almost funny.
  11. Well, we will have a manager, presumably. This discussion is kind of moot until we know if Betts and Price are gone anyway. That'll seal the deal.
  12. I'm not really down. But let's face it, if they trade Betts and Price, they're not all in for this year. It will confirm that 2020 is all about the tax re-set.
  13. I'm feeling pretty pessimistic about the 2020 team's chances myself. Especially if they trade Betts and Price, which seems fairly likely.
  14. I think the issue is that the starting pitching outlook seems much worse. The only pitcher who took a step in the right direction was E-Rod. Pessimism abounds about the health of Sale, Price and Eovaldi. (Price may be gone of course.) Johnson and Velazquez turned into rotten pumpkins etc.
  15. I don't think so. I suspect people are generally just looking at the total dollars. Rendon's total dollars were $245 mill.
  16. But in this case, there is no result of the investigation that would make it less desirable to trade Betts.
  17. Personally I think they are readily apparent and already discussed in infinite detail.
  18. What a nonsensical question.
  19. But you've been of the opinion that if they trade him it's unlikely he'll be back, right?
  20. Sadly, I think I'm out now.
  21. Well, anyone who says that is being dumb.
  22. I don't think % wise too many people think it's only 5-6 years.
  23. How long ARE they, you mean. They've only just begun...
  24. We sure as hell don't need that.
