    A loss of fans isn't just bad for Henry, it's bad for the fans who are left. Decreased revenue could lead to further payroll cutting. The glory days of this franchise may be at an end.

    Fair enough. And if they had a chance to do it over they'd probably take it. I think fans need to be a little more forgiving with an ownership that has consistently invested in the team and brought success on the field.

    He didn't say it exactly that way. When he said we're cutting payroll in September, that was probably the most honest statement. And he got ridiculed for it, because supposedly it put the team at a serious disadvantage in negotiations. Subsequent statements were all pretty ambiguous. The message, as such, was that the primarily goal wasn't cutting payroll but being competitive. And they tried to explain that the competitive part included the future. It was a mess, I'm not denying that. I just don't think any particular approach would have gone over well. Red Sox fans in general don't like cutting payroll or trading a Mookie Betts no matter how you dress it up.

    The point is that Beeks isn't very good himself and not a good example of DD giving away starting pitching.

    Yeah, like 'coach's decision' on Malcolm Butler not playing in SB. That really put that to rest!

    Nothing doesn't work. As soon as they hire Bloom, and don't spend any money on free agents, the media would have a pile of stories about how they were obviously cutting payroll to re-set.

    But the media and fans don't accept silence either. There was a lot of complaining that the Sox didn't really explain why they fired DD. The whole mess started with Shaughnessy asking Henry point blank back in September about whether they intended to re-set the tax, or words to that effect.

    So what do you think they should have told the public about their real plans this offseason?

    And what's funny is that Henry got slammed for every single thing he said, whether he said the re-set was coming or whether he said it might not be. Just as with the DD firing he got slammed for saying next to nothing. Red Sox media and fans have turned this kind of bitching into an art-form.

    Since Henry bought the team they've had one of the highest payrolls every year. And won 4 titles, more than any other team in the same time period. How unethical!

    No, but there are other Canadian accountants who are. In any case it's irrelevant to the factors that motivated the Red Sox to trade Betts.
