    Fans really are totally into the present. If you go through last year's game threads I don't think you'll find many comments about how great it is watching Mookie play. What you'll find is mostly nonstop griping about how bad the team is playing.

    Baseball fans have been armchair managers as long as I can remember. "Why the hell did Darrell Johnson take out Willoughby?" In the modern era where there are so many transactions and big contracts and payroll issues and we have so much info about it all, fans like to play armchair general manager even more.

    Mookie has hit more homers on the road than at Fenway. It's his doubles that go way down on the road - 94 vs. 135 at Fenway. It's not my intention to be a detractor, just to take a hard look at his numbers as he stands on the brink of an enormous payday.

    One thing I wonder about Mookie's career is whether his hitting will live up to what people expect with his contract. I was looking at his home/road splits vs. Trout's. Mookie .930 home/.858 road Trout 1.000 home/1.000 road (how's that for round numbers and consistency.) Trout's road OPS is a whopping 142 points higher.

    If Mookie stays healthy he certainly has a chance of aging well.

    Let's be clear: they would have 'easily kept Mookie' for this season only. Is that a big deal? Nothing will be easy about keeping Mookie after this season.

    Mookie will turn 28 by the end of this season. So he'll turn 33 in the 5th year of his new deal.

    Yeah, the only difference is, if he got hurt, people would also be criticizing Mookie for not signing an extension when he had the chance.

    Here's what I think: If we kept Mookie this year, and got off to a crappy start, there would be a lot of people asking why the hell we didn't get something for him when we had the chance.

    How much spending is enough to satisfy people? They spent more than any other team in baseball the last two years. This year they'll be all the way down to third or fourth highest in spending.

    Larry and DD did good things. Then they messed up. Now they're gone.

    2012 - Larry picked BV. Then the Punto trade which could be pinned on Theo. 2015 - Not only Panda and HanRam, but Ben messed up on the pitching staff a wee bit.

    Can't read the article, but... The new tax system has only been in place since 2017. The Yankees re-set and then spent. The Dodgers re-set and then spent.

    300/10 could be an albatross too, obviously. It's about drawing the line somewhere, isn't it? It's a difference of 12 million a year. It's not much different from you, moon and notin pointing out that 11 million is too much for JBJ, but 6 or 7 million would be OK.
