    Question for you moon: If elite outfield defense isn't worth $10 million a year, Why the heck do you think Mookie is worth $35 million a year? Especially keeping in mind he has an .858 OPS away from Fenway, which is hardly elite.

    Cora was the first manager to ever use his starters in relief that much in the postseason. It seemed to work pretty well.

    Cora used the fresher arm with Sale. Kimbrel had thrown 28 pitches in Game 3 and 28 in Game 4. He was throwing in the pen in case Sale got in trouble. That was just good management by Cora.

    For that matter, Mookie didn't do much in the 2018 postseason.

    Mainly, the payroll & tax problems meant they couldn't make acquisitions in the pitching dept. A lot of the guys from the 2018 team are making a lot more money in 2020 - Betts, Bogey, JBJ, Sale, E-Rod - because of the arb rules and the extensions. The 2018 team paid 20% tax and up. The 2020 team would pay 50% tax and up.

    That's true, but the 2020 team couldn't hope to duplicate that, for numerous reasons, starting with all the payroll and tax problems.

    Friedman departed after 2014, so that's 5 whole seasons he's been gone. It's the Rays success in 2018 and 2019 that Bloom has been a lot of the credit for.

    It was an option, but it was a stupid one, arguably - to put out the same basic team as 2019, finish third again or worse, pay luxury tax, and lose Mookie for a 4th round pick.

    The rules (tax rates, free agent compensation) are also way different.

    One thing about this that hasn't been talked about much is the impact of the new rules on compensation picks for losing a free agent. Getting nothing more than a 4th round pick for losing a player like Mookie is almost an insult. If the old rules were still in place they would have had more reason to keep him this year.

    Pedroia is just an example of the bad luck that can befall any team who signs a player to a long contract. And his contract was about one quarter of what Mookie wants.

    From a philosophical perspective, and this is strictly a personal thing, I find talking about the prospects DD traded away gets a little tiresome eventually. There's nothing that can be changed about it, and not much that can be learned from it, and it's just not that interesting any more. We need to focus on what we do have and what Bloom can do for us.
