  1. On the one hand 8/60m is a bargain if he works out as a starter level player at 2B. ON the other hand he has proven pretty much nothing. How many of his free agency years did we buy out with this deal? He struggled in spring training but has played well to start the season from what I can see.
  2. Crochett looked pretty good on opening day. As long as he stays relatively healthy for the remainder of the contract this looks like a good deal to lock in a top of the rotation pitcher. I feel this is a good long term move for the Red Sox.
  3. .111? wow that's even worse. mlb reference told me his OPS was in the .550's. ok it's updated to .111 now. that's an ice cold slump! lemme check casas. .180 OPS. OOF. our middle of lineup is DED. should Abreu bat cleanup for a little bit? he's sitting at a crazy 2.30 OPS!
  4. We're in last place after losing back to back close 1 run games to the Rangers. Devers has been atrocious with a .552 OPS to start the season. To give you an idea how bad that is, the awful, stinky, atrocious return of JBJ to the Red Sox saw him bat .578 OPS before we got rid of him. Now this has only been ONE 4 game series. So it's a super small sample size. But clearly something is wrong with Devers and he might be cold for a minute before he figures it out and gets out of his slump. But our whole middle of the order could be doing better. Casas and Devers have been ice cold. I think perhaps Cora should consider tweaking the batting order to account for this? We can't have Devers and Casas stranding people. Why not put the hot hitters in impact positions till Devers and Casas figure it out.
  5. A good win against the Rangers to start the season. Crochett pitched well enough to win. The bullpen was solid. Went back down to earth in game 2 with a 4-1 loss. Offense did not click. But Abreu has been the surprise of the early season. Who would think he would start off the season this hot? Campbell has also been hitting well. He may well stick if he keeps it up with his bat and plays solid defense. Hopefully we can bounce back with a win and take the series. Talent seems to be there. We just need our big bats to warm up. We need more from the likes of Devers, Bregman, and Casas.
  6. Another day another rumor. This time more Sandy Alcantara talk. According to this article, Bowden thinks the Red Sox would offer a package for the Marlins star pitcher headlined by OF Wilyer Abreu and 3 minor league prospects Perales, Arias, and Valera. article: Red Sox Predicted To Swap Wilyer Abreu, 3 Others For Marlins Ace Sandy Alcantara Is the price too steep? If this deal is palatable would it be better to make the trade sooner to get him used to the Red Sox or later when Roman Anthony is likely to be ready to step in?
  7. Looks like Hamilton has won the 2B job. Also Grissom got optioned out to Triple AAA. This is his last option year. Unless he develops and is called up later this year, the Red Sox might need to cut bait on their central acquisition from the Chris Sale trade. I'm optimistic about seeing a future IF of Mayer SS/Campbell 2B. And then later Roman Anthony in RF. For now the kids will get the most playing time and best development in the minors. But hopefully we get to see them again when rosters expand and maybe they can contribute a little down the stretch.
  8. There are growing indications that Campbell will be our starting 2nd baseman. He's had 3 starts next to Story in a row. Bregman I think will play 3B and Devers has grudgingly accepted the DH role. Defensively that probably gives us our best infield with Casas at 1B. 9. BTW Do we trade Vaughn Grissom because Marcelo Mayer could be ready soon or what's his story? He hit poorly last year, nor did he light it up in the minors. Article in favor of trading him: https://www.si.com/mlb/red-sox/boston-red-sox-news/red-sox-urged-to-trade-24-year-old-change-of-scenery-candidate-amid-roster-crunch-jackson3
  10. All three of our big prospects hit a Homerun in the same game. This is the future we are looking forward to. Hope they are ready to help the big club soon! Article: https://www.mlb.com/news/kristian-campbell-marcelo-mayer-go-back-to-back-in-spring-breakout
  11. I agree, let's give up lesser prospects and players by keeping Yoshida out of the trade. I would def pull trigger on Abreu + Arias for Alcantara. Alcantara would be a good get for us but maybe Miami doesn't want to give him a fat contract after his 2 years are up so getting something decent for him now would be attractive rather than taking him all the way out to free agency. Also the slight uncertainty of how well he is recovered from injury might sway them to listen to a Red Sox trade offer. I know we will eventually need to find a way to dump Yoshida's salary but let's not do it at the cost of one of our Big 3 prospects.
  12. Anyone else hear about the Red Sox interest in Sandy Alcantara? What would it cost to land him and should we be in for him? He's a two time all-star and the AL Cy Young just 2 year sago. I would be very excited if he ends up in Boston, just not sure what the package would cost. article: Red Sox Favored In Blockbuster Trade For $56 Million Cy Young Pitcher
  13. What if that DH/1B is Big Papi? I'm not going to sit here and say I can predict VGJ will turn into "that guy" but he certainly has all the tools to be "that guy." Some people are just special regardless of position. I'll wait to see how he does this season but if he puts up 5+ WAR again I believe it's a no-brainer to go after him HARD in the next offseason.
  14. I think Devers feels he is a 3rd baseman and knows he would lose value if he were moved to 1st or even worse DH. But the man is already getting fully paid, it doesn't matter where he plays on the diamond. I think this year is evaluation to see how well Devers does at 3rd and to see if Casas blooms. If Casas becomes a monster hitter, maybe it's Devers who gets moved to DH instead. or Maybe we move Devers to 1st to keep him happy, Casas at DH and trade Yoshida even if we have to eat giving up a couple 2nd tier prospects to dump his salary. BTW there are a lot of trade rumors involving Yoshida lately so if we can move him, that would allow us to shuffle our infield as discussed above.
  15. I really thought this was all faked interest. But they actually pulled the trigger. He's an instant upgrade on defense and a right handed bat. Too bad he has to play 2nd base and not his best position at 3rd base. But it feels far too late to trade Casas at this point. Might as well see if the can bloom into a power bat. Then he might be worth even more next offseason. So Devers 3rd, Bregman 2nd, and Casas 1st looks like our infield. Story -might- play SS if the man of glass can can avoid getting hurt and missing 3/4 of the season yet again. I'm hoping Marcelo Mayer is ready soon so we can have a real player at shortstop. PS It sounds like Alex Cora might have been doing some hard pushing to get Bregman on the Sox. Article: https://www.si.com/mlb/red-sox/boston-red-sox-news/red-sox-manager-alex-cora-wants-this-119-million-free-agent-badly-per-insider-jackson3
  16. Correct. The Red Sox don't want to committ financial resources to make the team better. Instead they will buy one year band aids and hope it's enough to make the team competitive so they can sell season tickets. That's all they care about is the money. There is no "pedal to metal" mindset. It's all about keep the salary low, do just enough to appease fans and maybe get over .500. There is no ambition for playoffs or postseason contention. The ownership has decided to go CHEAP and as long as that continues it almost doesn't matter what GM we have even though Chaim Bloom was pretty darn awful.
  17. Hitting grabs headlines but Pitching wins ballgames. It's smart to grab higher upside prospects and see if you can develop them to become better. It's too bad Breslow is handcuffed in the finances for improving the roster. Imagine what he could do if he didn't have one hand tied behind his back?
  18. We have plenty of budget room. But the ownership has mandated cheap acquisitions. You can't acquire premium free agents with lowball offers.
  19. Red Sox miss out on Tanner Scott. Rumors they offered more than Dodgers is false. They lowballed yet again and of course fell short of the bid. Bullpen is still a big weakness for the Red Sox and they show no interest in spending to get good players in to shore up the weakness. I predict we can expect another multiyear deal for a pitcher coming off TJ surgery who won't play for us until year 2. 😴 Article: Conflicting Red Sox reports on Tanner Scott make Boston look even worse
  20. Agreed. The Red Sox have been spurning keeping their homegrown talent since the days of Ellsbury and Lester. But losing perennial all-star Mookie Betts was the most insulting loss and this franchise hasn't recovered from that loss since. Did you know that former GM Chaim Bloom described avoiding paying Betts his well deserved contract extension the same as "avoiding a car wreck?" It's just insane the mentality in the Red Sox front office. When all is said and done Betts will end up in the HOF and the Red Sox will be known for trading him away for a laughable return because they were too cheap to pay a market value contract.
  21. Hopefully they can push the opt out until year 4 of say a 7 or 8 year deal. If they really believe in Crochett they should lock him up long term. Arbitration gets you a couple of cheap years, but the price will drive up even more as that period ends.
  22. Wow nice research there. That makes the feeling of the Betts curse seem very real, especially if the Red Sox are saddled with the same cheapskate owners for the foreseeable future.
  23. This is the main problem I have with the Red Sox. They enjoy risking money on injury prone signings in the hopes the guy has a 'bounce back' instead of signing reliable proven players who carry the normal market price. Red Sox negotiations in a nutshell: Seller: I have this brand new state of the art high performance skateboard that I can sell you for $300. It has been used by pros who won big tournaments or at least placed in the top 4. Red Sox: Sounds steep, what else have you got? Seller: I have this $170 skateboard that was used by Tony Hawk once. It broke in half, we taped it back together, the axles are misaligned, and one of the wheels is missing. But with a little TLC and fixer uppering it might work out for you. Red Sox: Now that's a Deal. We'll TAKE IT!
  24. That's 28 million dollars less than the Yankees winning offer. They knew they were going in with a lowball offer just so they could say they tried. If the Red Sox spend more than 200m dollars on a single player this offseason I'll take it back, but right now all evidence points to them going in low knowing they will get the offer rejected just so they can say, "See we made offers on Soto and Fried, we did try really, really hard. But baseball is just too expensive a game for us!"
