  1. The worst of your 4 best hitters. As a general rule, the better your hitter the higher up they should hit. Also, what Tito does is not necessarily what's best for the team. Theo certainly has his faults as a manager.
  2. Out of the top 4, 3rd is actually the spot where you should put your worst hitter (of the top 4). Just because other teams do it doesn't mean it's necessarily the best idea.
  3. They picked up his option already.
  4. Idk. He used to have very good mobility for a catcher. Theo and the Sox medical staff have seen the medical results, I haven't. If they're right, then I think this is an ideal signing. If they're wrong, well...worse things have happened than carrying 3 catchers.
  5. The Sox wanted to know if Martin would be willing to play 3B and LF, in a sort of weird utility role (now offering even more positions than Bill Hall!) Given that they're pursuing him pretty hard, I'd guess that he must be willing. Given the unproven qualities of Salty, and Varitek's increasing age/injuries and declining defense, I feel like this is a deal the Sox have to make.
  6. I didn't really think so. Early the Yankees had stated they refused to budge past 6. The Rangers even planned to put an opening bid at 4 years, before they realized there was no way they could get Lee for 4 years.
  7. His career triple slash is not kind, and his UZR throughout his career varies between slightly above-average to horrendous (although, his horrific fielding year in Atlanta may be an aberration).
  8. First Francoeur, now Melky? What is Dayton's obsession with terrible outfielders? He might as well find some AAA journeymen to take the job, at least he would save some money and get a similar amount of production.
  9. I think the biggest benefit of this signing will be Burnett's face and stats every time he pitches against the Sox.
  10. Does Crawford play LF or RF? I'm thinking RF, given that there's pretty much nothing to patrol in left. Where does he bat? I think it's doubtful the Sox can go L/R/L/R/etc. Where does this leave the Sox with the rest of the offseason? They still have about $28 million under the luxury tax before arbitration; if Papelbon gets $10 million, and Ellsbury gets $3-5, that leaves enough for a couple relievers and a bunch of long-shot signings (Atchison 2.0 stuff), and not much else. Maybe Russell Martin. This is a big signing, but I don't know whether it's the right move going forward. Basically, my thoughts on Crawford are: f*** the Nationals, honestly.
  11. a700: Daily Remind - oh wait. I bet Theo got his lunch eaten in the negotiations, though. :harhar:
  12. Depends. If Crawford goes off the board first, then maybe. But if the Yankees don't get Lee, there will be hell to pay for every other team that wants Crawford.
  13. That, plus a few complimentary pieces, is what I think the Sox will end up. Which I think would be pretty solid.
  14. If the Mets are offering Beltran, with all of his salary, for a ML player, obviously that is a deal that no GM would take on. The Mets would have to eat salary to get anything in return, and the reason they would eat salary to take on Dice-K is because Dice-K also fills a need for the Mets. You view Dice-K as a straight salary dump, which he's not; he's a little overpaid, but not incredibly so.
  15. Why not Bobby Jenks? He struck out 10 an inning last year, walked 3 an inning, had a GB rate close to 60% (all pretty close to his career numbers), and suffered from a .368 BABIP and 65% LOB average. And he doesn't cost a pick. Sox are looking into retaining Okajima, presumably for less money. I don't think this would be a terrible move if they also acquire two quality arms, in addition to Okajima.
  16. What? If Ordonez and Beltran cost the same, moving Dice-K to the Mets means you save $20 mil over two years; acquiring Ordonez then trading Dice-K means you save $20 mil over two years, maybe minus a bit depending on the suitor. I agree, but I'm just saying, if you're willing to acquire Ordonez and Lee, I'm not sure why you can't also acquire Beltran and Lee, especially if Matsuzaka gets moved in both cases.
  17. I don't think that it's worth it to the Sox to acquire Lee, but I don't think you're correct on a couple points. 1. That the Mets won't include money to trade Beltran. No one will take on his contract in total, even if the Mets give him away for nothing. In order to move him, they will have to eat a chunk of salary, making it close to Ordonez's salary. 2. That a trade for Beltran+Lee signing puts the team in a worse position than just acquiring Ordonez and Lee outright. The pieces in the Beltran trade are either Matsuzaka or Scutaro - assuming Lee is signed, he fills in Matsuzaka's spot, or if Scutaro is signed the Sox break camp with Lowrie as their shortstop. Theo seems reluctant to move Dice-K, though. I think that, if he can't get a suitable RH OF, the Mets would move Beltran and $6-8 mil for Scutaro. It fits the needs of both teams perfectly. Mets need a 2B and money off the books, Sox need a RH OF bat.
  18. If Crawford signs with the Tigers, we lose our picks, right? Would've rather had Lee than Lackey, but too late to complain about that now.
