2025 Red Sox
9-40 when scoring 2 or less runs
27 times scored 1 or less runs (4 shutouts)
2024 Red Sox
4-47 when scoring 2 or less runs
31 times scored 1 or less runs (7 shutouts)
We'll have to see if the Sox still have about 50 games where they score 2 or less runs or if it increases due to the roster change as some anticipate.
The only time that the Sox won a WS with a bottom 10 defense was in 2004 when they had an absolutely stacked offense. Even if they had Devers and Bregman on this roster, they weren't going to compete with the 2004 roster. This roster is built to be more dynamic and needs to play better defense. Having a backup IFer that can competently field every IF position is important when the starters include Story and Mayer on the left side (most likely). Adding a guy like Durbin who has a good approach at the plate is important when 6 of your projected '26 starters were over 24% k rate last season.
I don't think it's about "accumulating WAR" either. It's about building a ballclub. That's something that things like PECOTA don't quantify very well. Good starting pitching. Good defense. Good at bats. At one point in our fandom, people wanted dirt dogs. Guess they don't anymore? They just care about homeruns and their fantasy stats.
I would doubt that even with Cole coming back from IBP. Kutter hasn't pitched in a long time. The last time he did pitch, he led the universe in HR's given up.
The Red Sox should have made several attempts to acquire every good MIFer in the league over the offseason. That one of them was Zach Neto isn't surprising to me or makes me thinking differently of the Durbin trade.

I watched a few videos of the ambidextrous Seigler. I now don't want him moved. They need to turn WOO into banana ball with Seigler.
STL is worse for RHB than BOS. Conteras should see his numbers increase a little bit from 20 HR, 124 wRC+. He should be a bit better than Bregman was overall (considering the Breggie fell off a cliff after his injury). Maybe he'll be closer to his '24 numbers? IDK.
They believe Anthony will make up for the early season Devers numbers. We'll see!
Refsnyder? Romy can only hit once in the lineup, so IDK. There's a downgrade somewhere vs LHP.
I think they'll be better defensively, but offensively it's a question mark. Maybe Abreu continues to add HR's. Maybe Rafaela continues to get better across the board. Maybe Mayer starts to figure it out. Maybe Casas comes back healthy and takes over for Masa. Maybe none of those happen.
Dubin will be compared to Devers, Neto, Marte, Paredes, Hoerner, Shaw. If any one of them has a really good season, someone gets to gloat for no good reason. Just brainless.
It's not a comparison since we don't know the trade package. If they had to trade Mayer, you'd have to factor Mayer AND Durbin AND Tolle AND whoever else vs Neto.
Reminiscent of the Joe Ryan trade packages from last year's deadline. Angels may have been in talks with the Sox, but they may have not been serious about it.
Neto is 25. Not all players continue to grow after a certain age. The Angels don't have any other franchise player left. Just because we want him, doesn't mean the Angels were going to give him up for a reasonable package.
