    A player will generally graduate from prospect status once he exhausts his MLB rookie status. Rookie status is exhausted once a player: (1) has more than 130 at-bats in the majors; (2) has pitched more than 50 innings in the majors; or (3) has been on an active major league roster for more than 45 days (not including time on the injured list). For example, Fitts has 20.2 innings, so would either need about 6 more starts to graduate or reach 45 days service time. Probably reaches the service time first. If Penrod is on the Opening Day roster, he would reach 45 days at the end of April.

    Since the reinstatement of the luxury tax/CBT in 2003, here are the years the Sox were under: 2003 2008 2009 2012 2013 2014 2017 2020 2021 2023 2024 This is the first time where they've been under for 4 out of 5 years.

    One of the main focuses of pitching development this year was adding velo. If Ingrassia was unable to add velo, it could be a red flag going forward. SoxProspects aren't always great at updating their scouting reports during the year so there could be a lag, but Ingrassia isn't a guy they were hyping up throughout the year either.

    I wouldn't worry about replacing Masa with an external option considering the internal bats that will be supplementing the roster next year. I'd do a straight salary dump and eat half the contract.

    It's probably his primary position going forward anyway considering the direction his defense is heading.

    The reason he hurts "this team" is because the owner is in a stingy phase. If this was John Henry circa 2002-2018, Masa's contract wouldn't matter and the team would be plowing forward. The only reason we talk about moving on from him is that we believe he's a hindrance to their payroll aspirations which is total BS, but it's the new world we are living in. In theory, Masa is fine coming off the bench or as a platoon DH. In today's reality, he's preventing the Sox from getting a frontline starter.

    His -2.5 BsR was pretty bad. There were 1393 players with higher scores than that last year. If you do a cutoff of 400 PA's, he comes out to 162nd, tied with Verdugo, Naylor and Vaughn at 22nd percentile. Guys with worse BsR scores and less HR's than Masa: Urshela Pham Jose Miranda

    Interesting as Statcast shows his xBA as 260. 🤔 Why would we assume his BA should go up considering how poor his exit velo is? His line drives went up, but so did his fly balls. With that exit velo, they weren't going very far.

    Cora had no problem sitting Masa for any number of reasons. Maybe we'll see more platooning going forward? Maybe we won't? I think Refsnyder's overall success against RHP this year was to Masa's detriment (774 vs RHP starter in 30 GS). Maybe Masa's platooning will look more pronounced if Refsnyder stops hitting RHP in 2025?

    After the ASB, in games in which he subsequently pinch hit, he sat against 4 LHP and 2 RHP. He sat out a whole bunch of games due to injury and other roster reasons, so it's futile to really go through all 162 IMO.

    Masa has a team high Balls Put in Play % of 76%. The MLB average is 62%. The low for a Sox regular was O'Neilll at 47%, His 7.3 AB/K, also leads the team (3.6 league av.). He also had a team leading swinging strike % of 10.4 (Rafaela was worst at 28.1 for regulars). His overall contact % led the team at 85.4%. It's nice when the data matches the narrative. On the otherhand, his XBH% and HR% were lowest for all regular Sox.

    Unless Ingrassia can tap into velo, I don't believe his stuff will play at higher levels. He's another guy that tends to pitch backwards. Like Isaac Coffey, there will be success early, but struggles at AA and higher most likely.

    I guess it depends on what we consider "big moves." Giolito at 2/38 doesn't seem big enough. Needs to be 50M+ maybe? JDM Xander extension Nate extension Sale extension (keys taken away and big moves were few and far between at this point) Story signing Masa signing Raffy extension

    I agree that they jumped at the opportunity to sign Masa. Story just kind of fell into their laps as he was unsigned for so long and Bloom felt like the deal was reasonable (it wasn't). If you go back and read all the blogs and news articles at the time, they all iterate on the idea that "it was a return of the big spending Sox" and "what a surprise" the move was and "what a jolt it will be for the clubhouse." I remember most of us on here were fairly nonplused about it and worried that they had just signed Xander's replacement. Well, it ended up being a move that really didn't work out in the end.

    I wouldn't call signing a broken SS to play 2B in ST "chasing a star player."

    Some people have wanted him off the roster since the day he was signed. There are lots of moves we could discuss. This is the one being discussed right now. Talked about trading Duran ✅ Talked about trading Mayer ✅ Talked about trading Story ✅ Talked about trading Wilyer ✅ Talked about trading Casas ✅ Talked about trading Masa ✅ Talked about acquiring players from the Marlins and Mariners (must be done annually) ✅ I don't think people really want to talk about trading potential rule 5 guys (i.e. bullpen arms). Spend the rest of the offseason figuring out a realistic trade destination for Rafael Devers?
