In years past, the Sox swooned and missed the playoffs. Not sure starting relievers (which they HAVE done) is a good comparison.
Feel free to defend the DFA'd Buehler. I won't, but you can.
Buehler's rank among starters with 100+ IP
2nd worst FIP
10th worst ERA
3rd worst HR/FB%
3rd worst BB/9
4th worst K/BB
5th worst WHIP
WORST fWAR
7 QS ties Andrew Heaney who was also DFA'd
We've said before "there's no way all these guys are still on the roster" and have seen offseasons come and go. Who know what the OF rotation looks like. I would say that two spots go should go to Rafaela and Anthony. I'm open to any other combination of guys after that.
It's just what they need for the last few weeks of the season, not for the rest of is career. Plus, if he's in the bullpen, he can lean on his FB more and not have to worry about the pitch mix the Sox were tinkering with that caused his on field numbers to dip in AAA.
The problem is that the Sox can't go with a 3 man rotation. Post-ASB, it was May and Buehler at the 4/5 and neither will be pitching down the stretch. Both had negative fWAR (combined 2-5 record) in that time period and weren't holding up their end of the bargain. If the Sox had better 4/5 options, there'd either be a bigger WC cushion or would be leading the division.
May was a failure. Not replacing Buehler was a failure.
I don't know about that. Early on, there was something very special about Kershaw's curve. I saw many of his starts live and the only other curve I remember being in awe of was Barry Zito's. I got to see both of them a bunch.
The real joke is some of the vets we tried throwing out there. Sheesh.
"I think Buehler is a good signing because he really turned it around the last 10 innings of the playoffs!"
"Once Bailey can work with Dustin May!"
At least we don't have to rely on the Brad Peacocks of the world to get through the season.
Great night for Early. I was always surprised that SoxProspects were lower on him than the other guys. He seemed to have all the tools fly through MiLB and have a shot as a back end guy somewhere (5 pitches, 4 above average pitches, lefty, good frame). Once he added a little velo, he reached that next level. Not sure he'll be this dominant going forward, but it's nice to dream on the ceiling.
It happens all the time and is nothing to worry about. If May/Hicks/Fitts are out the rest of the year, Early could be on the roster if they wanted him to be. It just depends on if they think he'll be a valuable starter or if he could fit in a relief role (questionable).
Sox will have more than enough injured pitchers that can be "replaced" by Early or any other AAA guy they want. The 40 man roster designation is a formality.
No, just in the org.
Postseason Roster Rules & Eligibility
Definition
For the 2025 season, any player who was on the 40-man roster or 60-day injured list as of noon ET on Sept. 1 is eligible for the postseason.
Those on the restricted list at that point are also eligible if they haven't been suspended for performance-enhancing drugs during that season. (All players who have served a suspension for PEDs in a given season are ineligible for postseason play that year.)
A player who doesn't meet said criteria for postseason eligibility can still be added to a team's roster in the postseason via petition to the Commissioner's Office if the player was in the organization on Aug. 31 and is replacing someone who is on the injured list and has served the minimum amount of time required for activation. (For example, a player on the 10-day injured list who has been on it for at least 10 days, or a player who has been on the 60-day injured list for at least 60 days.) Players who are acquired in September or after are ineligible.
