Dammit Dammit Dammit I do NOT want to see Ellsbury gone. Lester is probably at a high as far as his trade value is concerned and I don't see him being a #2 starter, or a #3 even down the line. Further, with Santana in the mix where does that leave Lester? Beck Santana Dice-K Schill Bucholz Lester Wakefield Meanwhile Ellsbury makes out lineup SO much more dangerous. Our 2-6 hitters become greater weapons with this guy, and he isn't like Coco, you can't just throw right to him- he frustrates pitchers and cranks doubles like crazy. he is much more dangerous on the basepaths than his predecessor and takes pitchers out of the at-bat so our 2-6 can take advantage. I love Santana, but Coco is not my guy in Center and this also leaves us with lots of young pitching with nowhere to put it, Yeah, Yeah, you can never have enough..i know. I'd much rather see them add another prospect or upgrade a prospect in the Lester deal. Yes, we are spolied as Sox fans right now, i know. I've never worn a sox number on my back in my life and I was ready to go for Ellsbury's...

Yankees might pull out of Santana chase...(for now)

You mean you didn't know that every Yankees pitching prospect has the expected career-life of Greg Maddux? Whats wrong with you Yaz? -
Is Melky a better player for the twins than Coco? Where the twins play, speed and defense are more valuable than average and power. I know Melky plays good D and can run, but I think Coco's CF makes him just as valuable if not more, to the Twins organization. Personally, I am not a Coco guy and I love Ellsbury so if this deal gets done with Coco and Lester and without Ellsbury I'll be excited.

I'm not for or against A-Rod coming here. If the sox get a good deal, good for them, if not, happy to see him elsewhere- a couple thoughts: "this team ain't broke. Doesn't need fixing". True. 2004's team wasn't broke either. Petey, DFL, KFC, Dougie ballhog, O-Cab, Billy M, JD Forehead. These men were loved by many, some of them by all. And if we kept them we wouldn't have won another World Series. What about A-Rod makes him a dick? A fag? ok, sure, he tries to hard and parts of his personality scream, no define "effeminate". Lets get it straight people. He doesn't treat people like Barry Bonds. He speaks out much less than Curt. He cheats less than Boggs, or DFL. A-Rod's personality is what the media makes of it, much like "spy-gate", steroids in MLB (and somehow NOT in the NFL), and any other story or lack thereof. If they decide to put something, or PART of something in the spotlight, thats just how it is. They can ignore blatant game fixing (see last sunday) just as easily as they can put up 24 hour media coverage about Michael Vick. If this isn't clear to you, ask Jim Ed. He'll explain it for you loud and clear. What did A-Rod do in New York that was so awful, honestly? Did someone piss on his wife? Was he speaking in the third person in every interview? Was he picking fights with teammates? Smoke crack out of his glove between plays at third? So far I haven't heard of any of that. But i did hear that HE HIT 50 f***ING HOME RUNS AND BROUGHT IN 150 RBI'S AND BATTED .314 IN THE TOUGHEST PLACE TO PLAY FOR THE MOST FICKLE, BANDWAGON, TWO FACED FANS ON THE PLANET. So if they canget him for the right money and not sign him for the next decade, then who the f*** cares? Give him a shot. Anyone remember who hit that grand slam after the two "important, awesome, best ever" players went down with the bases juiced. essentially killing the Guardians pitching staff for the rest of the series? I'll give you a hint. He hit over .300 in the postseason, despite being known as a "choker" We don't need A-Rod. I don't need a million dollars. but If I can get a million dollars for 750,000....i'll take it. And lastly, I don't think any of this matters, because I don't think he would have opted out if he was concerned with money first. He was sick of the circus, and sick of millions of fans judging everything from his left nostril to what ugly women he brought home. He was sick of hearing about whether he was a "true yankee". He must have been sick of it, because we were sick of it, and he had to hear it 100 times for every one time we heard it. If so, good for him.

WEEI Rumor: Santana to Red Sox for Coco, Buchholz, Lester

s***** scouts and bad FO decisions? Sounds like a certain baseball team in New York 5 years ago... -
Thats pretty darn cheap for a 3.87 ERA and the experience he brings. Good work, FO.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3096549 Curt Schilling and the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement on a one-year deal worth about $8 million in base salary and another $2 million in potential incentives, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reports. The agreement is pending Schilling, 40, passing a physical exam. On his Web site, 38pitches.com, Schilling gave an update on the negotiations. "Talks with the Red Sox are moving," he wrote. "[Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein] and I have spoken multiple times daily over the past week and given the current situation I am feeling very confident that we will be able to finalize a 1 year contract to allow us a chance to finish our career as members of the Red Sox organization. "There are some things to iron out and details that must be finalized for both sides but barring something unforseen or outrageously odd happening I feel very comfortable that I will finish my career here." Schilling, who is not represented by an agent, went 9-8 with a 3.87 ERA last season. He won three games in the postseason, including Game 2 of the World Series on the way to Boston's sweep of the Colorado Rockies. Schlling is a six-time All-Star who has been with the Red Sox for four of his 20 seasons. The Boston Herald, which first reported that Schilling was near a deal with the Red Sox, reported that the Astros, Diamondbacks and Phillies all contacted Schilling on the first day of free agency. But Schilling posted on his Web site: "I made it clear to all three teams that my intent was to do whatever I could to resolve this and remain in Boston for the final year of my career." In 2004, Schilling went 21-6 and helped lead the Red Sox to their first World Series title since 1918, but his velocity has since diminished. After the Red Sox declined to give him an extension, Schilling said in February that he would become a free agent after the season. He said then he would return for Boston in 2008 for $13 million, the same salary he earned in 2007

I highly doubt this, particularly since the NFL had to apologize for the pass interference call on Ellis Hobbs that they incorrectly made in the AFC championship- a call that could have cost the patriots the game. I smell vegas money.

WEEI Rumor: Santana to Red Sox for Coco, Buchholz, Lester
Paradisecity replied to toledosoxfan's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Comparing the success rate of the growth of highly touted position prospects compared to pitching prospectswould bring some value (or, in my opinion take away some value from) your argument. Everyone is the next Santana, the next Pedro. And yet, there is one Santana, and there is one Pedro. Its a lot easier for great position prospects to succeed, again, in my opinion. -
Oh there are plenty of other instance. The difference is that he WALKED AWAY WITHOUT EVEN HEARING the deal the yanks put out there for enormous money.
-
The scary thing is that Boras probably will get what he's claiming.... he usually does.

I dont defend anyone other than Mr. Logic. I defend Mr. Crunchy sometimes when his boyfriend Mr. Shaughnessy takes to the bottle and wails too hard on him, but thats a different story. Do i think he'd be a "cancer"? Probably not. Do i think he'd bring lots of unnecessary "sportscenter" like atmoshpere to our clubhouse, ANY clubhouse? Absolutely, and I think it should significantly decrease his market value in a place where that additional attention won't sell any more tickets and won't increase marketing to make it worth it. Would i take A-Rod for 20 M. Yes. 22M? Maybe 30 for 10 years? No f***ing way. As far as the contract length, yes, A-Rod has never been injured. This changes very little, IMO. Ken Griffey Jr had two seasons out of 12 under 145 games when he reached 30. Imagine if someone had been on the hook for 30M per year of the last 7 years of Griffey?

I'm pretty positive that there was just a hint of sarcasm in the dice k statement. Perhaps you are missing it, or perhaps you are intentionally overlooking it so that you can be an ass. Either way, Bravo to you, sir. As far as the price. Is .314 54 156 worth more than TWICE AS MUCH as .324 21 120 when the latter is considered by everyone he plays with to be a clubhouse guy who helps the development of younger players and is a team leader and the former is considered by those who have played with him to be an arrogant guy whose presence creates clubhouse problems, intentional or otherwise? The price, for ANY player, should never exceed a 5 year deal. People get hurt, and coughing up 30M per season for someone who could have a Matt Clement like injury would be devastating and ruin a team for a decade. Yes, it is generally pitchers, who get hurt but not solely. Furthermore, when dealing with this large an amount of money there ARE intangibles involved, and one of them SHOULD be how a player is received by his teammates. Kevin Millar sucked. Kevin Millar also made peanuts. Wanna tell me they win without him and his shots of JD in '04? Perhaps we should have picked up Aubrey Huff and signed him to a 5 year, 100 Million dollar deal instead? That would have worked out well. How many World Series titles do Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez have? I bet you're a big fan of Eric Lindros.

Sorry, I didn't feel like calculating any PECOTA numbers or dealing with NPVs of A-Rod's 2004 Upper Deck Game Used Jersey baseball card. But since I'm supposed to stay on topic, I have determined that A-Rod is worth $25.1035 Million U.S. Dollars per year or $22 Million Canadian dollars based on the following calculations: (2007 Batting Average * 2007 Stolen Bases * 2007 Runs Batted In * 156 Homeruns in 2007 * 3% of outs made are GIDPs * / .444 2007 On Base Percentage ) /2 number of transvestites A-Rod will accidentally sleep with in next 5 years * 100% chance A-Rod will be a doucebag for every day in the rest of his natural life. As you can see these numbers take into account much more than just the current dollar value paid and overall numbers. What the organization really needs to decide, is what the applicable this**** rate will be on average in the mlb over the next ten years. Feel free to discuss. Sorry I got off track earlier.

The reason we are celebrating our second title in 4 years is because management didn't get nostalgic and made less than popular moves to prevent financially crippling the team. Petey was my favorite player ever but I understood why they let him go. We fans knew Damon would kick our ass in year 1, be worth it in year 2, and by year 3 be overpaid. Cabrera gets us Ellsbury, my vote for MVP. Everyone NEEDED to have Billy M back. Nostalgia and complacence are what stifles organizations. This organization seems to be doing a decent job with that so far. Maybe Manny will be worth it. Maybe he won't. But I trust that this management has a plan, and I do so with good reason considering the simple fact of banners delivered.

Derek Lowe looked great in the '04 playoffs.

"the large father" that one had me rolling around laughing, as did the thought of Ortiz bedazzling a lamborghini on the back of his jacket. -
just pm'd you the message from the lounge

Mr Crunchy? funny? When I equate those two i can only think of Mr Crunchy 40 feet below in negril's warm water, with a button up shirt riding up and parting across his bulbous tummy. When you are done reading this "Everyone Lick Crunchy's Balls" thread, Say hi to the kids for me

Talie did you ever get that pm I FINALLY sent over on the other board? You gonna be in Boston this weekend?
-
Yeah he f***ed up when he convinced Drew to opt out too, right? You're the Boston Red Sox- are you going to pay J.D. Drew 5M more than Ortiz per year? Listen- the red sox aren't mad at Scott Boras for this. They don't freaking care. They just have to pretend they are pissed so that we fans can feel a sense of entitlement in our pissiness. It gives the sox the perfect excuse not to sign A-Rod if they don't want to. If i may quote Ben Affleck in Boiler Room: "act as if" thats what the sox are doing. I also don't think its Scott Boras making ALL the calls here. They would have listened to the yankees at the table if he was. I genuinely think A-Rod said "no f***ing way am I playing here for that long. I am sick of playing second fiddle to a guy who is inferior to me at shortstop and hit 40 less homeruns and i'm sick of the NY media. f*** this place, Rodriguez out." I wonder if Tom Hicks threw Boras a few million as a thank you?
