  1. Hey All, It has been a while since I posted in here but I thought this was worth it- Buster Olney is hosting a Charity event for Vermont farmers whose livelihoods were crippled during the flooding in Hurricane Irene. There is an online auction with cool prizes like pitching lessons from Curt Schilling, or Cashman's private luxury box. Or you can attend the roundtable at Vermont Technical College- Brian Cashman, Theo Esptein, Olney, and others will be there. Lastly, you can just donate through the website. http://www.battingforvermont.com
  2. I met Heyman in the Newark airport on my way home for Thanksgiving. Had a beer with him while he got food in terminal A, the worst terminal in the United States. Very nice guy. I hope he is wrong.
  3. I vaguely remember discussing an attempt to get his numbers against "good" vs "bad" pitching sometime in the last few months. Did anything ever come of that? I'd truly be interested in seeing it.
  4. Is there a stat that someone can dig up that shows Otriz's production against quality (i know, subjective) pitching over previous years, last year, and league averages? I'd be interested in seeing what that shows.
  5. http://www.projo.com/redsox/content/Red_Sox_Journal_Tazawa_04-02-10_VMHVP4O_v2.2e4deef.html By Brian MacPherson Journal SportsWriter FORT MYERS, Fla. –– Twenty-three-year-old pitching prospect Junichi Tazawa will undergo Tommy John surgery early next week, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said on Thursday. Tazawa will have the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow reconstructed on Tuesday in Birmingham, Ala., at the clinic of well-known orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. He’ll miss the entire 2010 season, and will need a bit of good fortune to be ready to start the 2011 season on time. “We usually are a little conservative,” Red Sox GM Theo Epstein said. “If he does it soon enough, there’s a chance he could have a spring training next year and pitch next season.” Tazawa had pitched through discomfort late last season and into spring training, and when he complained of tightness in his right elbow a week ago, it prompted the Red Sox to send him to meet with Andrews. An examination showed a partial ligament tear. A decision was delayed by a couple of days to make necessary arrangements — a team interpreter will make the trip with Tazawa — but the damage left Tazawa and the Red Sox with few other options. “We kind of knew we were leaning in that direction,” Francona said. “It’s just not sending the kid out there by himself.” Tazawa had been expected to begin the regular season in the starting rotation at Triple-A Pawtucket. The righty had a 2.55 ERA in 20 minor-league starts, including two for the PawSox, before a late-season call-up to the major leagues.
  6. Pedro coming into game 5 in relief for 6 no hit in '99. More so than him doing it, I remember him walking out towards the mound and saying "Game over." He was beyond amazing in those couple years.
  7. Please let this not be true http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/1300/sox-look-at-another-old-lefty-embree
  8. One of those "the eyes lie to you" stats that proves the need for statistical analysis I guess I agree Dipre- it drove me nuts. It always seemed like against good pitching, he was seeing terrible pitches and swinging since they knew his desire to do so. But again, "seems" isn't always what it seems, apparently. The funny part is while I was typing that pop-up line I was thinking that I should look up the stat for it, but I knew if I posted that line more than one someone on here would find it anyway!
  9. Master of the first pitch swing and pop up.
  10. Regarding Nixon I completely agree: he was never on the field, and to be honest never turned out to be the player that the hype had him becoming years earlier. I just don't think you can compare guys when you bring in one that costs twice as much as his predecessor (who wasn't exactly cheap himself).
  11. I would like to compare Clay Bucholz to the player that he preceded him in his position for our team, John Smoltz. Clay Bucholz is the best pitcher ever.
  12. Hey all- I did some searches on mlb.tv but couldn't find what I was looking for- I have AT&T UVerse and live in Austin, TX now so I don't have NESN. Is MLB.TV my best option? Will I get blacked out a lot? How does it look when you stream it into a HDTV? Is the process difficult? Thanks

  15. Somebody put one up here already. It looks purrty.
  16. Yeah, Brazil is the favorite to win that group, but he Ivory Coast could absolutely win it. The US exposed Brazil's weaknesses in the Confederations Cup. The Ivory Coast also has the player that is arguably the most potent striker in the world in Drogba, and Brazil's back 4 don't match up very well with him. As usual, the group stage will probably be determined by their results against the other teams rather than each other. And since this is a soccer thread, I'd like to say on a somewhat unrelated note....f*** Garry Cook.
  17. Gom- I would say that while losing Gonzalez might hurt the Pads with their Hispanic fan base, keeping him when they can acquire multiple pieces makes more sense. The Padres will not be able to compete for another 2 years probably. Moving Gonzalez now gets them more talent for the future. They could then spin off Bucholz in a similar move and have an amazing, cheap young team that can be competitive for a few years, like the Rays.
  18. Yeah they need to unload Lowell now.
  19. I think it makes great sense. Bucholz and one more top flight prospect is definitely worth it, and you are losing 2 players for one top 10 hitter in the majors. If they were to sign Lackey, it would essentially be trading one pitcher for another who costs a lot more and getting Gonzalez for one top prospect. If that is the case, I make that move over and over again.
  20. I think he is under the impression that if we sign Lackey, we would have Beck, Lester, and Lackey so we could move Bucholz in a trade for an infield piece.
  21. No. This isn't about Mark Teixeira. I was using the logic you used in disagreeing with signing him (since we have plenty of discussion on him saved) to question what exactly you want the sox to do now? The concept of spending to get the great player they need doesn't match your logic from a year ago (which is my opinion, and you are saying im mischaracterizing), which is why I brought it up, and now we've gone full circle.
  22. Nice slip!
