  1. When I hear this debate over whether a WS championship is worth the risk of Helton's huge contract, I cringe. First of all, we wouldn't be taking his whole contract. Maybe we'd have to pay him as much as 13 or 14 million a year. He's certainly worth it if he reverts to form. Second, if we don't win a championship with him in the first year or two, we could trade him. Unless he falls off a cliff this year, someone will want him. We may have to eat 2-3 million a year, but so what. That's what a POS like Tavarez or Cora makes. It's chump change to the Red Sox and it wouldn't impede other dealings or signings. It's not an all or nothing proposition so why do you guys weigh a WS Championship against a 5 year huge contract. Those are not the only options.
  2. Yes, surely 10 year veterans have as much to prove in ST as a Rookie with 90 ABs and a .191 average. That's a fair comparison.
  3. He catches the ball very well, blocks the plate like an NFL lineman, and he is a great handler of pitches. He can't throw out my grandmother on the bases, even on a pitch-out. His release is so slow, and his arm is not that strong. However, his value behind the plate is incalculable. The only two times that he has had extended DL stints the team took unbelievable nosedives. I don't think that is a coincidence. Pedro attributed the first nose-dive to Tek's absence.
  4. Pedroia got a couple of hits and got on base 4 times. He was down to .200 and I was getting really nervous.
  5. Dice K pitches great for 5+ innings and MDC immediately gives up a gopher ball. We should have packaged him and Hansen in the Helton deal or for Chad Cordero. These two guys are pitching themselves off the ML roster and losing their lustre as prospects. Also,Pedroia is down to .200. How many AB's does he have? I am really starting to worry about him.
  6. 100 percent correct. If he does well, which I expect he will since he is healthy, his price will go up and he'll want more than 1 year. If his price goes up to high, they'll let him walk leaving a gaping hole in the rotation, and in the worst case scenario he walks to the Yanks making them stronger. There is almost no upside to waiting him out. The smart bet is to lock him in now at a reasonable cost.
  7. He has looked very good this Spring. He's prepared to be the ace of the staff onced again. The FO should extend him before they come north.
  8. I think you may be overstating the case a bit. Only one new starting pitcher was acquired. The other new starter (Papelbon) came to the rotation at a huge cost to the bullpen, which is in a shambles. As for the offense, the bottom of the lineup is weak. I don't agree with the 87 win prediction, but I am not ready to believe that this team is a powerhouse.
  9. Superstars make a lot of money and the Rockies were willing to pick up a substantial portion of the contract. He's healthy and poised for a comeback year. He's hitting .448 this Spring. He regularly has a .400 OBP. Theo should have pulled the trigger. He would have been shedding $8 million for Lowell and about another $2 or 3 million (not to mention the headaches) for Tavarez. If all he had to throw into the mix was Hansen, he should have pulled the trigger. The bottom of our lineup is not strong at all. Helton in the middle of the order would have made the lineup very formidable.
  10. I hate to bet against Red Sox players so I will not. I hope you are right, but I don't think Youklis has enough gap power to keep defenses honest. The OF will start playing him shallow and his average will fall to the .270's before season's end. A .270's hitter with no power and no speed is not a very marketable commodity. I still think they should have sold high on him. He has a work ethic, and that is the only thing that got him to the majors, not his talent. A ton of guys in AA and AAA have more talent.
  11. I realized a week or so ago that the choker I was remembering from the Twins was Rincon.
  12. He closed. It was nothing overpowering.
  13. I stepped away for awhile, but noticed #82 playing and batting RH. Box score said it was Iggy Suarez. I think I may have solved my Jacoby Ellsbury sighting.
  14. Romero has been consistently effective this spring, plus he seems to be very confident in his command.
  15. I think he would have been in already if he hasn't constantly revealed himself as a liar and low-life scumbag. The man doesn't have a sincere bone in his body.
  16. If Turnbow is our only option, I think I'll give Piniero a chance.
  17. I'm glad the front office refused to move him in that rumored trade for Helton.
  18. I hope this guy Drew stays healthy. He is a very smooth player. He's not flashy, but he does everything very well.
  19. It's average by second base standards.
  20. I know you were joking, but I was just clarifying for other readers that I too like young players who perform well. I like to sign them long term too.
