Wasn’t there some concern felt by Sox management about Pedro’s health back in 2003-2004? As I recall it was discovered that he had a frayed or torn rotator cuff, and because of that he missed time during the 2003 season. There were also reports that there was a noticeable drop in his velocity. Because of these uncertainties of how durable he was, it affected the length of a contract that the Sox would offer him.
With that said I think this was the main reason why the Sox offered him what he considered a lowball offer, when his contract expired in 2004.
I would LOVE to see him come back and pitch for the Sox in 2009, but I believe in the minds of Sox management they simply don’t think he’ll be effective and healthy. JMO…
