The scramble to create space on the 40-man roster spots continues for the Boston Red Sox.

In their second trade of the day Thursday, the Red Sox sent infielder Tsung-Che Cheng to the Detroit Tigers for cash. The 40-man roster crunch comes with the end of the season and needing enough spots for players who were on the 60-day injured list. The 60-day IL does not count against the 40-man roster.

The Red Sox, even with subtracting players who became free agents Thursday with the end of the World Series, needed to clear four spots on the 40-man. To begin the day, the Red Sox traded outfielder Nate Eaton to the A's for minor-league right-hander Jareth Rayo.

Cheng appeared in just 14 games for the Red Sox this year after being claimed off waivers from the Washington Nationals. Cheng was claimed off waivers by four teams after being designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates at the end of last season. He went 10-for-39 (.256/.318/.282) in his one call-up. In 94 games at Triple-A Worcester, he slashed .241/.345/.390 with eight homers, 30 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.

12-1 in his starts.  13-1 in appearances.

Sox were 75-74 in games Cheng didn’t start.

74-74 in Cheng-free games.

Sox will miss their MVP.  (Maybe?)

Brez is always in front of these types of roster moves that help set up future additions.

I know most of the players he gets don't ot haven't amounted to much, so far, but why not get some hopeful prospect rather than just DFA someone?

TCC was traded for cash, so I'm not sure that counts as a "hopeful prospect" TBH.

I'm always of fan of maximizing one's resources, at any level, for any amount.

Me too, and while trading Perales is not this sort of deal, we did get Bennett for him.

DD tried to ruin Song (or helped) just to hurt the Red Sox.

Four on soxprospects.com…

5 in top 11, and 6 in top 17, but counting Cespedes as a SS is comical.

Let's call it 4 in top 11 and 5 in 17.

Cespedes is NOT a SS. He may not even be as good at 2b as Valdez was.

Godbout doesn't project to play at SS either, but isn't the defensive trainwreck that Cespedes is.
