Jack Winnay promoted to AA. He leads the farm in BBs with 53. He has 11 HRs and an .891 OPS.

Made sense as Stanley Tucker was sent down last weekend. They had nobody blocking him at 3b, but he's probably going to need to be moved to 1b.

POR now has three RHB 1B/DH types IMO: Brannon, Johanfran and Winnay. Brannon has the most power. Winnay may be the best all around.

Has Johanfran been written off as a Catcher?

Woo lost 4-1 as Sandoval started the game and threw 34 strikes in 53 pitches. (3.1, 4H, 1ER, 1BB, 1K) Cheng had 2 hits (.794.) Ward & Romero went 0-9.

POR lost 7-5 as Rogers pitched poorly. Arias seems to be hot, again (3 for 5 and at .978 again.) Garcia went 2-5 (.901) Winnay walked "only" twice.

Futrell sure looks like the real deal: 12 Ks, 1 BB, 2Hits and 0 ERs in 6IP, as GRE won 2-0. Heyman homered and Anderson had 2 hits.

SAL can't win anymore. They lost 7-2.

The FCL Sox lost 10-9 and walked 10 batters. (Delzine did not do well.) The DSL teams split the day.

Is it time to demote Alcantara to GRE and promote Cespedes?

How about flipping Justin Gonzales with Bleis or Taylor?

It's not uncommon for prospect Catchers to be moved to 1B or DH, but the Sox have 4 Catchers/Ex-Catchers at their top 3 levels:

AAA: Newly added Knizner, Delay & Thaiss plus Hickey at 1B/DH.

AA: Baez & Rosarion/Garcia C/1B & Brannon 1B/DH

A+: Gerardo Rodriguez, Luke Heyman, Hudson White & Ro Hernandez C/1B

I was kind of shocked by this promotion. But I think the advanced strike zone recognition impressed the Sox management.

He is 23 years old. He played mostly 1B and OF in college, so I'm not sure he can stick at 3B.

Futrell took over the farm lead in IP, in his 12 K in 6 IP game last night. He's 6-0 with a 3.05 ERA, but that .606 OPS Against is pretty impressive for a SP'er.

Other Sox pitchers with nice OPSA and 30+ IP:

.428 Delzine FCL

.454 Eyanson A+/AA

.508 B Morgan A

.554 Mayers A

.570 Bennett (now in MLB)

.594 Rogers FC>/AA

.595 Rivera AA/AAA

KC 3 for 3 yesterday. All K’S. 5-48 in June with 22 K’S, and some say on here he’s just working on things.🙈

Winnay has 57 BBs and just 52 Ks.

Will Turner 50-49.

Sogard 35-29 (MLB 6K:5 BB)

Seigler 26-26 MLB 6K: 2BB)

Gasper 25-27 (MLB 21K- 9BB)

POR has a nice win as Ziehl pitched well. Garcia, Brannon, Arias & Baez 2 hits and Alcantara 3.

Bello did okay in Woo's loss.

Gonzales his his 10th w GRE (3 hits) He's at .812, now.

SAL continues losing and losing.

He's really regressed post knee injury. He lost a lot of athleticism behind the dish.

I could see them benching Nelly, not demoting him. Same with Alcantara.

Knees are crucial for catchers. If he could keep enough skill to be a 2nd or 3rd catcher, his bat might make him a worthwhile 26 man roster addition. I'm not sure his bat is good enough to be a DH or 1Bman, but maybe it can be. He's had pretty nice exit velocities and is still just 21.

That's been the big question on him and why SP has him ranked in the 30's. Once he was no longer seen as a solid defensive catcher, he slid down in the rankings. There are things to like about his bat, but some concerning things as well. He needs to fix his bb rate and get the k rate down. If he can manage his weight a little bit, maybe it'd be easier on him behind the dish.

10BBs in 185 PAs is pretty bad, and it's hard to know if he can sustain his .358 OBP by hitting over .300 in the bigs, but there is still hope.

Romero hit a homer in Woo's game, tonight. (They lost 13-1.)

Holobetz pitched well for POR, who is losing 4-3 in the 9th. Bleis hit two bombs.

Witherspoon pitch 6 nice innings as GE is down 6-4 in the 8th. R Hernandez and Anderson homered.

SAL is on their way to another loss: 8-1.

Now that Cheng got the call, how about promoting Arias to AAA?

I realize there is more to making that decision than an opening at the next level, but why not?

Maybe promote Cespedes from GRE to POR< and see how he does against better pitching.

I-witness Portland game:

Holobetz is an animated guy on the mound, nodding with calls he agrees with, throwing harder when he's squeezed, hopping on and off the mound, whooping at the end of innings. He throws from a lower arm slot, bending his long frame with a release point just over his shoulder -- not easy for hitters to pick up -- and is consistently in the mid-90s with his heater and a hard slider. With 10 Ks per 9 average and barely any walks, he is nearly MLB ready.

Jofrann Garcia can crank -- crushing BP pitches to all fields, batting clean-up, and gunned two guys out trying to steal. Reminds me of Francisco Alvarez at this level, and should be a big leaguer soon enough.

Bleis lined two hangers out, hitting them off his front foot. More mature at the plate.

Liendo is a smooth fielder.

I hope to catch a Sea Dogs game this July.

While highest ranked FCL prospect, Dorian Soto, is batting just .607, there are plenty of bats to open our eyes:

1.296 Primera might pass Soto by the next rankings update.

1.250 Louis Andujar

1.022 Josue Brito

.977 L Martin

.939 E Darville

.909 Jorge Rodriguez

.861 J Peguero

.801 C Alvarado

.797 H Rivas

#23 Hector Ramos is struggling at .570

#11 Sadbiel Delzine is living up to his ranking with a .428 OPSA in a team-leading 31 IP. Williams Montero is ranked and at .690. Merlin Bido is at .620, Berny Ortiz at .674 and Yomar de la Rosa at .471.

Remember the Luis Basabe brothers? Well, the DSL team has two Emanuel Jimenez pitchers-  both with OPSA below .539. Jesus Lopez is at .480

Bats at DSL:

1.078 Santiago Yanes

1.026 W Bruce

.973 G Martinez

.968 J Ramirez

.913 Dawvris Brito (#32)

.898 Freyerso Vasquez

.738 G Silverio (#29)

Woo let up 22 hits and walked 5! Romero & Ferguson homered.

Eyanson looked good, again. 1 ER in 5.2 (3H, 3BB, 2K) Bleis homered again (3rd in 2 gms) & Arias homered and is back up to .993. Jo Garcia had 2 hits (.877.)

GRE lost 11-9 as YRod, Heyman and Anderson homered. Heyman (.857) and Anderson (755) had 3 hits.

SAL got a rare win. Foutch pitched no hitter for 3.

Concerned about eyanson’s and Mullins walk rates.

and slightly concerned about eyanson’s dip in velocity! Is he on the verge of developing forearm soreness???

Mullins is showing why we didn't protect him, and nobody claimed him. We both wondered why they never promoted him to AAA. He's 25 and still in AA, now! I doubt he can even become a decent RP'er

Eyanson is a newbie, so I think there is hope he can improve on his walk rate. Maybe he can become the next Early, if he doesn't.

K and walk rates are important but not always everything. Here are a couple good K:BB ratios from our top IP farm arms:

63:9 Futrell in 56 IP

64:11 Ziehl in 59 IP

Sandoval went 4 in Woo's win, today. (3H, 1ER, 1BB, 3K) Moran went 2 perfect innings. Capra homered and had 2 hits.

Wehunt pitched very well in POR's 6-0 win. (6IP, 1H, 0ER, 0BB, 8K) The pen K'd 5 in 3IP. Zero BBs and 13 Ks and just 2 hits. Bleis hit his 4 HR in 3 games and Arias had 2 hits. Brannon K'd 4 times in 4 PAs. Winnay homered (.835 in AA) Frazier homered, too.

It seems like the entire Boston organization (majors and minors) really struggled through April and May.
eyanson and arias are two of the few that have performed all year thus far!

Tolle and Early have done fine. Bennett was not "developed" but the "organization," but they did acquire him by trading one of our own- Perales.

Tolle’s high in innings pitched is 91, I think! He is already at about 80!  Something has to give soon. (See houck, Crawford and crochet for examples of pitchers that far exceed their max innings in year 1 and then crashing and burning in year 2)
