Three members of the Boston Red Sox have been named as 2025 Rawlings Gold Glove finalists. They are catcher Carlos Narvaez, center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela, and right fielder Wilyer Abreu.

This nomination marks the second year in a row that Abreu has been nominated, and he hopes to take home the award in back-to-back years. The calf injury that kept him out towards the end of the season could hamper his chances, but he still put together an incredible season while on the field.

Narvaez led all catchers in the league in runners caught stealing with 24, good for a 29% clip. He was one of the best defensive catchers in all of baseball, but his catcher interference calls could work against him to a point.

Finally, Rafaela is up for his first nomination after a stellar year in, mostly, center field. He logged enough hours at his primary position to be considered for the award this year and the sheer amount of highlight reel catches he made in 2025 should make him an overall favorite to bring home the hardware.

The Red Sox are showing they have an eye for above-average defensive talent at a few key positions. These three names should continue to show up on these nomination lists for years to come.

Gold Glove winners will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 2.

It's also worth noting that Franklin Arias was runner-up to Dru Jones for Minor League Defensive Player of the Year.

Jones is an outfielder, which means Arias at shortstop is at least as good with the glove as any other infielder in the minors... according to evaluators.

With the Red Sox' current infield instability possibly forcing Marcelo Mayer to play 2B or 3B, it would be wise to hang onto Arias -- especially for a franchise building its future around pitching.

I like Arias on D, a lot, but I don't even trust MLB defensive awards, so I'm not sure he is the best infielder on the farm. He's good enough for me.

Has a catcher who led the league in errors (among catchers) and passed balls ever won a Gold Glove?

Maybe it would shut up the fldg% freaks....

NOT!

I would not give the award to Narvaez. I would for Rafaela (4th in CF errors) & Abreu.

Arias's calling card is his hit tool, not his defense. Defensive awards aren't always given to those who deserve them the most.

My thoughts on minor league defensive awards - the Red Sox Minor League Defensive Player of the Tear in 2016 was Rafael Devers.  Was he good then? Or the rest of the org just really, really bad.

Anyway, I hope Arias works out…

Ivan Rodriguez, 1999.  He also won AL MVP that year…

The Sox MiLB defensive player of the year award goes the player who (a) needs encouragement and (b) practiced a lot.

Always suspected some teams may give minor league awards to prospects they're considering as trade bait.

As for entire minor leagues naming award winners, clubs with players receiving hardware may reward ballot-punchers with 300 bonus points for first-time voting.

Soxprospects.com summary on Arias:

Potential everyday regular at shortstop. Ceiling of a quality regular who provides value with his glove and contact ability. Hit tool is a standout tool, but lack of power and speed limits upside. Defensive profile provides him a solid floor. High baseball IQ; actively seeks to learn more and improve. Needs to get stronger and continue to physically mature to reach his potential.

Are you implying that Palmeiro winning a Gold Glove while playing DH was evidence MLB had a drug problem?

I'm implying that he's just a very annoying guy all around.

His impotence made him angry…

I can't believe he filmed those while still active playing in MLB.
