Wow.  I'm sure many of us (each for our own quite different  and specific reasons) found this extremely difficult to read.   Hang tough, JD!

I think it was really great and important that he talked about this. I know sometimes people think some of these athletes are super human and whatnot, but they are still just humans.

Mental Health among men really isn’t taken seriously enough sometimes, especially in sports and I respect that he was able to talk about this.

I’ve always been a fan of Duran, and I’m glad he was able to overcome his personal issues and is still alive to talk about this and be an advocate.

He seemed to hit a low, when he got into it with fans and VERDUGO of all people was the one to go out and calm him down.  Same season he failed to chase the ball he misjudged, right?  Tough time.   Can't help but think of Donnie Moore.

As someone mentioned above, men's mental health is very often overlooked and even downplayed. How many times have we heard "man up", "don't be a crybaby", "suck it up", etc. when dealing with an issue? If you can't talk about it then it can bottle up, and for some lead to an extreme scenario down the line, like the one Duran detailed. If that trigger didn't fail then the media would have been having a different conversation about Duran. There would be narratives about how he had mental issues, was weak, couldn't handle the pressure.

The whole suspension thing might have set him back a chunk, but he seemed to handle that one, pretty well- considering....

Duran's parents issues this statement:

“As parents, there’s nothing harder than knowing your child was in pain. We only recently learned the full extent of what Jarren went through, and it was heartbreaking to hear. We are beyond grateful that he is still here, that he has found the courage to keep going, and that he is using his voice to help others. If his story can help even one person, then it was worth sharing. We are incredibly proud of the man he is today and love him more than words can say. We will always be in his corner.”

We do sometimes tend to forget that these guys are human, and we often have no idea of what kind of personal struggles they are going through that may or may not be affecting their on field performance.  It's good to see more and more people feeling comfortable enough to talk about their mental health.  I hope it helps someone else going through the same thing.
