Brayan Bello with a 10-5 record , proving W-L irrelevance for pitchers, and a 5.32 ERA will pitch for Boston. Bello will need one of his best games of the year to keep the Sox in this one.

Justin Wrobleski, 24 year old July call up for the Dodgers who has only pitched twice, 10 innings total, in MLB with a 1.40 WHIP . But he does have Red Sox kryptonite in that he is a LH thrower.

Maybe this is the game where the bats get back on track and a win one for Brayan becomes the battle cry.

Saw some disturbing updates on injured Sox players. Story is making sounds that he could possibly be ready for October and the playoffs , if the Sox make it. Where have you been , Trevor ? The team missed you.

Worse, Vaughn Grissom will start a 20 day rehab assignment today, and be sure of one thing, he will use all 20 days. Will he then be optioned for further work in Worcester. Who knows? Glad that we got confirmation of life on this dude.

Worse yet, Triston Casas , who left us April 20, is not near a rehab assignment yet and could need all of August to be ready to play. What happened to that June 21 date? Dom Smith, who knew you would be having to earn your money .

Worsest, Chris Martin is nursing the elbow inflammation back in Boston, so no schedule on him. It will be next week before Justin Slaten is expected to start throwing again, hoping his inflammation subsides.

Amazing and good that a team can lose 33% of its expected starting lineup by mid April , along with a starting pitcher , Giolito, and Whitlock a little later and still be 10 over .500.

This game today is declared an importanat one for the Red Sox to win

Good post, Vegas. All the bad news that prints to fit.

As for making the PO's, overachieving worked for the BRUINS in the 23-24 season. Let's hope overachieving will work for this season's SOX.

Most of us have ruled out these position players from helping much the rest of the way -- except for Casas... who a few of us still can't see how he can regain his past torque at the plate, even with a fully healed core (what kind of therapy could possibly prevent injury recurrence for a 24 year-old pro athlete built like a house named after plural houses).

Injuries to Martin and Slaten may be more dire. We're less than two weeks away from annual meltdown month for overworked Red Sox relievers. At least tomorrow's Sunday, so we can check the Classifieds for the latest tag sales.

Clearly the Sox depth and foundation were undervalued, last winter.

Rotation: We've used 7 SP'ers and 3 "openers." Our #1 (Gio) won't start a game in 2024.

Houck was considered by some to be the 6th starter. Mostly 4th or 5th by others. Criswell wasn't even considered.

Pen: We've used 17 pitchers in relief. Martin was our best RP'er, last year. He's been on the IL twice and struggled for mush of the other times.

Slaten took up a lot of slack and is now on the IL.

Kelly, Weissert, Booser, Bernardino and Wink have helped.

C: have not needed depth, here, but some viewed our current tandem as both being back-ups.

1B: one area we sorely lack in depth and needed it. Smith has been doing better, of late (.934 in July.)

2B: it took a while to find a decent replacement, but the DHam/Romy platoon is doing okay.

SS: Rafaela has done better than any other back-up we've had since Iggy for one month in '21.

3B: have not needed depth.

OF: We went into the season with many OF questions, including on Duran and O'Neill. Our OF has the second best fWAR in MLB. It's hard to say who was the "depth," back in March, but whoever you think, they have done well. (Duran, Rafaela, O'Neill, Abreu, Refsnyder)

DH: Our back-ups to Yoshida have mostly done well:

PAs /Player as DH Only /OPS

51 O'Neill .825

44 Refsnyder .864

23 Devers 1.162 (when injured)

6 EValdez 2.833

(124 PAs total to Yoshida's 190 at .683)

s***** f***ing start.

Pop up to lead off, then 2K's by #3 and #4 after a single by our A-S ? O'Neill is fully baked with a 45% K rate in last 15 games. He did have a 3 hit night yesterday but did not create any runs. Maybe getting picked off of sorts upset him. I know it did the fan base.

It’s the stuff with left handed pitchers this year that boils my blood.

Bello pitching like a champ, 2 outs, 2-2 count and gives a HR to Gavin Lux, a .214/.562 hitter with 4 HR's in about 275 PA's. Darn, but it might be a comeback win set up for Boston Edited by vegasbob

They have to score more than 1 run against left handed pitching.

The 3rd inning offense may have been more spectacular than 1st and 2nd combined. Ref couldn't move Cedanne to 3rd, what happened to him and Lh'ers? Then Cedanne gets thrown out going to 3rd on a fly to left leaving Raffy on deck with 2 on. Baserunning booboos

Both Ref's and Wong's BA's are steadily coming back to earth.

When Rafaela took that head first slide into 3rd base he slowed down to a crawl.

Didn’t matter, he was out by 3 feet. Not a good play with then 2 outs and Raffy coming up. He’ll learn.

Ref at least gave a decent AB and fouled off a bunch.

Wroblrwski FB looks like it has some late movement, at least today.

Anyone else get the impression Wroblewski was pitching around Duran to get to O’Neill?

Had O'Neill been in Fenway , he would have been applauded for a double off the wall scoring 1 and maybe 2 . But he was in LA

Nobody told Roberts that Wrobie can't get the win or quality start if he pulls him this early. But Dave got what he wanted , a shutout start through 4.1

I'm dying, waiting for O'Neill's hot streak to start. leaves Duran at 3rd . Tyler is K'ing at a huge rate
