It is nice to have a top closer. Last year, the pen would have given away this game.

Meh. He absolutely blew back to back games on May 12 and May 13. In the 2d game Sale had gone 8 innings, giving up 1 run, and Jansen inherited a 3-1 lead, which he gave away. And just a week ago he gave up 2 in the 9th in a 4-2 loss to the Rays.

If an infielder or outfielder has committed errors that literally cost a game, they would be excoriated on talksox. But Jansen is above reproach when he blows a save.

In case you've forgotten, the Sox literally had no closer in the 2021 postseason. But they still beat the Yankees in the one game showdown, then the 100 win Rays in the ALDS, and then lost 4 games to 2 to the Astros in the ALCS. Having no closer was literally not a problem at all.

If a closer blows around 10% of his save opportunities, he's a great closer.

It's a game of percentages.

Bottom line the Red Sox are a better team with Jansen then they would be without him, and would had been a better team last year too especially the 1st part of the season.

Agree. He already has 14 saves. Last night's was somewhat precarious, especially given that line drive that was just foul or would have been a game winning 3 run dinger.

I’ll take a hammer like Jensen in the pen every season. Last year’s pen was a disaster. You can’t go for a very long run without a hammer and not have it cost you games.

But it wasn’t.

Max pines for the days when Barns, Streakman, Robles, and Bra Man was manning the pen.

You know a guy is great when people always remember the few times he wasn't. Jansen is one of the best of all time.

It is sometimes hard to tell when Max is serious and when he is just trying to get a reaction. Jansen has an 88 % career save percentage . As far as I can tell, there are only three closers in history with a better percentage. But it is hard to please everybody.
