Btw, I believe it's still JAD's game thread to open today. I was just a RH replacement yesterday.

Better stay ready though.

Any PLAYER in history. I mean, I wasn't implying the dude was going to make more than, say, what most of us on this board make. But yeah, I'd say LAD or maybe San Diego.

Slight misquote on my part, but it’s not like I was comparing him to Bill Gates. Ohtani will be limited to the top spending teams like the Dodgers, Mets, Padres, Angels, Yankees, and maybe the Cubs. The Red Sox just don’t do that anymore. But then over 3/4 of the league won’t be able to fit Ohtani in the budget.

Of course if his WC preference is true (and non-negotiable), Dodgers, Angels, Giants and maybe the Padres are really the only options. If WC is important to him, Boston was never a candidate anyway.

I’ll include the Mariners, too, just in case Ohtani idolized Ichiro and wants to follow in his footsteps. But I don’t consider this a likely result.

The Devers extension wasn't exactly chump change.

But it may look like that once the bidding for Ohtani starts.

A third of a billion vs. half of a billion. Will the insanity ever end?

Insanity is the right word. Babe Ruth was once asked if he knew his salary was now greater than the President's, and his answer was, "well, I had a better year." I think the President was Hoover, so he was probably right.

In the series on Baseball, someone commented that before the Reserve Clause was eliminated by Curt Flood's refusal to abide by it, players made roughly 7 times as much as the average fan at the ballpark. Afterward, it was 7 x 7 as much.

Assuming half a billion and 10 years of useful pitching/hitting, That's $50M/year. Forget the average fan because Ohtani isn't the average player. $50M just might be the average profit margin for a MLB franchise.

We've spent over $650M, since the March 2022 Story signing. Can we put to rest all the "small market" talk that had merit from end of the 2018 season to near the start of the 2022 season? (3+ seasons)

Yes. We're acting like a mid-market team now.

But where do we stand in total payroll for 2023?

Maybe around 10th. If we spend at the deadline, maybe we end up in the top 25%.

We fell so far behind in new spending, which to me, is real line to watch, and now, we are turning it around.

Let's see, if the spening continues, next winter.

If accurate, Cot's has the 40 man CB Tax calculation for Boston at $216.8 million for '23. Actually , there are not any really bad contracts that will burden FA pursuit over the '23-'24 off season, if Sale stays healthy . Sale's deal expires in '24, with a club option for '25 and a backdoor vesting if Sale is in top 10 AL Cy Young voting for '24. Turner costs $11M for '24 , but he could get moved at some point. Jansen has '24 under contract too. So does Rich Bleier ($3M) and a more costly sore shouldered IL designee Chris Martin ( $7.5M in '24).

Devers is locked in from '24-'33 and we'll see how that is wearing in 4-5 years. Yoshida is a gamble at $18M/year and is tied up through 2027 . Let him get through this year to learn American MLB pitching.

Garrett Whitlock is a lock through 2026 , with club options for '27 & '28 at low cost ( 4 years @ $18.75 million). Compare that to Paxton , who is yet to pitch for Boston at all in '22 or '23. Rumors are that he's close .

The wild card , imo, is Trevor Story who is under contract through 2027, with some complicated option/buyout possibilities for 2028. Story has got some earning to do when he returns in July (?) . The Sox need to get some mileage from this $20M-$25M player . If his elbow fix holds, he does cover either SS or 2nd base needs, both of which are a first half '23 black hole . He would certainly strengthen the RH hitting side of the '23 lineup
