Kike would be the best option right now of who is on the roster to move into the SS position.

And that is not a bad idea, as long as it doesn’t mean Duran in CF.

Maybe it’s time to move Duran back to 2b…

I believe, they've already said Chisolm is moving to SS.

Roster Resource has Wendle as the starting SS. Not sure what their source is or what criteria they use…

I'm talking as a bridge SS to Mayer and as a better choice than Wendle.

Now that Story is out, we need Rojas and Wendle.

I’m thinking Wendle would be for 2b. SS has now become another matter…

You think injuries follow a timeline that appeases fans?
That would be silly. His elbow was a known issue. He didn’t injure it grabbing for a drumstick on Thanksgiving. A competent medical staff would have better assessed his condition and recommended this course of action earlier.

At the time we started this, we thought Story could play 2B.

I’m not a doctor but I don’t think medicine is always so cut and dried.

Do we still have the same doctors from the 70's?

It sure feels like it!

I pointed out in 2022 that our medical personnel were borderline incompetent. These guys were terrible during 2022 and they continue to be terrible in 2023.

And sometimes the doctor isn’t very good.

Last year, Story was diagnosed with a flexor strain. Hopefully no practicing doctor is recommending surgery for a strain.

At some point since, it may have torn or frayed or whatever, and that is when it start getting tougher…

A few reporters are saying Story knew he needed surgery but was hoping rest would allow him to avoid surgery

Guess we'll see how this story develops...

Have we ever had a medical staff anyone thought was even just okay?

It would be interesting, if he was the only one who "knew."

reaching for the Turkey drumstick was the final straw for his elbow?

Apparently warming up to take part in the WBC was, per one talking head on MLB Network…

Only Story knew how much discomfort he felt. But he’s probably not the guy who should be diagnosing a need for surgery. He may have strongly suspected it, however…

Not to worry folks. Elvis Andrus is still available.

Bloom apparently has a newfound fascination with sprint speed. Andrus ranked 51st of 54 shortstops in this category, per baseball savant.

So maybe that’s why there has been little too no interest…

Per Jen McCaffrey, The Athletic:

Following the season, Story had no elbow problems, but when he ramped up his offseason workouts and began throwing just before Christmas, he started to feel pain in his elbow. Story visited a local orthopedic doctor near his home in Texas before flying to Boston to get the elbow evaluated by team doctors. Both groups decided the internal bracing surgery was the best option.

Also from The Athletic:

Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said the team doesn’t have a timetable for Story’s recovery yet, adding he “certainly would not rule out a return sometime during 2023.”

Might not even see him this year.

Ya... this is what I see as a part of the problem with Story.

I'm probably too old-fashioned for this discussion but I've always felt that once as player signs a contract they have an obligation to make every effort to actually be able to play. That means that they have to make the quickest reasonable solution possible to get back on the field.

It doesn't mean that they're going to be willing to take a "wait and see" attitude and hope things improve. "HOPE" isn't usually a good strategy, especially not when your employer has millions of dollars tied up in your being able to play and you're getting paid those millions to play.

But... I'm old fashioned.

Not a lot of detail in that tweet.

I agree that a player being paid heavily to play baseball should do whatever is necessary to play baseball.

But surgery can complicate matters. It’s not the perfect fix a lot of us fans think it is. It can have complications, which can lead to other problems. Such as the pain killer addiction former Sox RP Bobby Jenks claimed ruined his career. In many cases, especially pitching elbows, it provides only a temporary fix. The only real guarantee from surgery is a long recovery time.

I get trying to avoid surgery. I think it gets too easy to shrug it off as a fan and assume it’s part of the job. But it really is s big deal…

Hopefully this year he reacts and gets reenforcements. I hated that he made no moves after it was announced Sale was out again…

Story's contract is definitely looking terribly similar to Sale's...

Reportedly some teams have exit physicals when the season is done. I would imagine part of the reason is to see if anyone does need surgery in the off-season. No idea if the Sox do them or not. Or if this would have been caught in one. (Reportedly Story was warming up for the WBC when he noticed the issue.)

I’ve never played 162 game season, but I’m guessing after one, every single MLB player is sore all over. It’s basically a 3 hour game a day for 6 months. And most of them, if not all, probably think “this part of my body was sore last year, too, but a few months off and it will be good as new again. Just like every year”

And most of the time, they’re probably right. But when they’re not, it can go unchecked until even later than Jan 10.

The obvious question is whether Story's flexor strain in 2021 was a red flag that shouldn't have been ignored.

But our medical staff cleared Sale and they cleared Story. $285 million later...

The plan seems to be not to trade any meaningful prospects- no matter what the needs are on the team. This idea actually started whole DD was in power, and may have been one source of the friction that grew between him and top brass.

In the summer of 2018, we traded Beeks for Nate and Espinal for Pearce- not really earth shattering prospects, at the time. Since then, our highest prospect tarded was Aldo Ramirez for Schwarber. We are going on over 5 years with no major prospect traded away. This has been a big shift from the earlier DD years.

With the apparent mandate to reset the tax, this year, we are limited in spending choices and actual available free agents, at this point in the winter. It seems like paying Andrus makes a lot of sense, or maybe a trade for MRojas and/or Wendle from the Marlins. There are a few other SSs on the trade block that should not be too costly, but our middle IF has taken about as big a hit as ever.
