The Hall of Fame is a great honor for the players and a great thing for their families. The voters should not be so restrictive. Leaving out great players like Bonds, Clemens, Rose etc. is vindictive and dumb. And Billy Wagner has 422 saves and a career 2.31 ERA. By what biased or convoluted system is that not Cooperstown worthy? These writers need a good smackdown.

Wagner was naturally right-handed, but he broke his right arm twice playing football. He was also, as you noticed, rather short for a pitcher.

 

But this maybe 5’9” undersized hillbilly made it all the way to MLB by throwing 100mph with his weak arm. That alone makes him worthy of Cooperstown IMO. And then you throw on top of that the dominant statistics that he accomplished.

 

Wagner is a glaring omission IMO…

27.7 career bWAR. Multiplying by 3 is about right for relievers, so that would be an 83 WAR.

The Rays mastered it as low spending team, often trading for players who would have comp picks attached just for the picks. In 2011, they had 9 picks in the first round (top 60 picks) and 2 in the 2nd for 10 in the top 89 picks!- one was Blake Snell, but nobody else did great.

 

In 2013, they got Stanek for losing BJ Upton. They really did not use all those draft picks very well.
