Would you have traded the prospects to get him? 3 of top 5.

Hard to know what we'd have had to give him, but I like the extension numbers.

3 of Seattle's top 5 might not mean 3 of our top 5, but if it was Rafaela, Yorke & Mata, I might say yes.

Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo, the shortstops traded for Luis Castillo, are currently ranked No. 17 and No. 52 on MLB.com's Top 100 prospect list.

The trade also included pitchers Connor Phillips and Andrew Moore. Phillips now ranks No. 11 in an improved Cincinnati Reds farm system.

That Red Sox package probably would not be competitive.

Sounds about right. We'd probably have to have given Mayer and Rafaela plus more. I'd have probably said no, despite the friendly extension.

We'd likely have had to give up at least one from Mayer, Casas or Bello plus one from Bleis, Rafaela, Mata & Yorke- maybe 2.

Jays and Rays crush the Red Sox all season, and in the end, both only play two more games apiece in the final week.

AL Beast '22 postseason (thus far): 0-and-4.

Yet the Seattle Mariners, who went 1-6 against the Red Sox this year, advance without a postseason loss.

Perhaps the Seattle Mariners were willing to surrender two top shortstop prospects because shortstop Cole Young, their No. 21 pick in the 2022 draft, is destined to pass shortstop Marcelo Mayer, the No. 4 pick in the 2021 draft.

Maybe, I'm wrong on my anti-playoffs are a crapshoot position.

The Wild Card games in previous years were obviously a crapshoot, and so are the new best-of-threes.

Now we have 4 clear-cut favorites in the Yankees, Astros, Dodgers and Braves. Let's see how they do.

Of those 4, I'd give the Yanks the least chance of winning it all.

The playoffs are not a crapshoot in the sense that every team has an equal chance. Obviously, the best teams have the best chance . But it is very much a crapshoot in the sense that all the teams do have a legitimate shot. Any short series is that way. Even a weak team can win a short series . And there are no weak teams in the playoffs. So it is fair to use the term "crapshoot."

I don't see any of the WC advancers as having even half the chance as the top 4 teams.

Fortunately, that's not how the playoffs work.

The only good thing about the Sox not being in the playoffs is that you can enjoy the games without feeling any pressure, stress or angst. The bad part is that you feel a sense of disappointment and envy. Like a kid with his nose pressed against the toy store window , knowing that he can't have any of the nice toys.

No. You have to play the games, and some of the odds makers don't see it my way, either- some do:

Fangraphs:

19.6% HOU

16.4% ATL

16.2% LAA

11.7% SDP

11.2% NYY

11.1% PHI

9.6% SEA

4.2% CLE

SB Nation shows the odds are 2 times better for the top 4 teams, though...

+310 LAD

+380 HOU

+500 ATL

+500 NYY

+1000 SDP

+1100 PHI

+1300 SEA

+1800 CLE

I'm tempted to put some money on these crazy M's right now!

They would get my vote as the best of the non top 4.

I think the Astros win it all.

When will players ever learn. Donaldson thinks he hit a homerun and ends up being thrown out at first. This shot would never happen in the 80's and 99s. And the next batter promptly hits a triple

This new playoff format sucks ass. A team having to play 5 straight away games before having a home game? What a joke. And not to mention having to burn your top pitchers while the other team gets to save them. This ain't football where rest is the only advantage. It's a lot more impact in baseball.

But the teams with the 2 best records in each league deserve an advantage. This new system rewards regular season performance.

The Phillies are coping quite well with the disadvantage so far.

It's better than one game play-ins, but I dislike the other teams getting such a long rest.

There's no perfect way to do it.

Eventually, it's going to go to 8 teams making it from each league. No byes. No one game play-ins.

Whether they shorten the regular season or not, is the bigger question.

To me, the 162 game season is what weeds out the bad or worse teams. Letting 16 out 30 teams in diminishes the value of such a long season, but it's all about money.

Had there been a 16 team playoffs, this year, the Sox would have been in the race much longer, and finished just 3 GB the CWS. The first round match-ups:

AL

CWS v HOU

TOR v SEA

BAL v NYY

TBR v CLE

NL

SFG v LAD

SDP v STL

MIL v ATL

PHI v NYM

Maybe. We're only at 6 per league right now, so that would be a huge step.

Their reward is home field advantage
